and Saʿd ibn Mālik.” [He added, then fell silent.]
I asked, “And who is the tenth?”
He said, “It is I.”
It is fitting to insert here the previously mentioned ḥadith of Umm Salamah, in which she said to Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Jadalī:
“Do you revile the Messenger of Allah from your pulpits?”—and so on. Aḥmad also related it (1).
[Another ḥadith]
Imam Aḥmad (2) said: Yaḥyā ibn Ādam and Ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us; they said: Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Ḥubshī ibn Junādah al-Salūlī—who had witnessed the Farewell Pilgrimage—who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“ʿAlī is from me and I am from him, and none conveys on my behalf except I myself or ʿAlī.”
Aḥmad also recorded it through Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī, from Isrāʾīl.
[Another ḥadith]
Aḥmad (3) said: Wakīʿ narrated to us—he said: Isrāʾīl narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq reported, from Zayd ibn Yuthayʿ (4), from Abū Bakr:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him with Sūrat al-Barāʾah to the people of Mecca, proclaiming:
“No polytheist shall perform the pilgrimage after this year, no one shall circumambulate the House while naked, and none shall enter Paradise except a Muslim soul. Whoever has a treaty with the Messenger of Allah, its term remains valid until its expiry; and Allah and His Messenger are free from obligation to the polytheists.”
He said: Abu Bakr travelled with it for three days, then the Prophet said to ʿAlī:
“Catch up with him, bring Abu Bakr back to me, and you deliver the proclamation.”
[So he did.] When Abu Bakr returned to the Messenger of Allah he was weeping and said, “O Messenger of Allah, has something happened concerning me?” He replied:
“Nothing but good has happened to you; I was only commanded that none should convey this except I myself or a man from me.” (6)
[Another ḥadith]
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad (7) said: Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān Lawayn narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Jābir narrated to us, from Simāk, from Ḥanash (8), from ʿAlī, who said:
When ten verses of Sūrat al-Barāʾah were revealed, the Messenger of Allah summoned Abu Bakr and dispatched him with them to recite them to the people of Mecca. He then called me and said:
“Catch up with Abu Bakr; when you reach him, take the letter from him, then proceed to the people of Mecca and recite it…”
