I heard ʿAlī say:
“By Him who split the seed and fashioned every living soul, the Prophet ﷺ made a covenant with me that no one will love you except a believer and no one will hate you except a hypocrite.”
Aḥmad (1) transmitted it from Ibn ʿUmayr and Wakīʿ, from al-Aʿmash. The same report was also narrated by Abū Muʿāwiyah, Muḥammad ibn Faḍl, ʿAbd Allah ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī (2), ʿUbayd Allah ibn Mūsā, Muḥāḍir ibn al-Muwarriʿ (3), Yaḥyā ibn ʿĪsā al-Ramlī, and others, all on the authority of al-Aʿmash. Muslim included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (4) through (5).
Ghassān ibn Ḥassān likewise related it from Shuʿbah, from ʿAdī ibn Thābit, from ʿAlī. The report reaches us through several other chains from ʿAlī, but what we have cited here is the sound version, and Allah knows best.
Imām Aḥmad (6) said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Faḍl narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah (7) ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Naṣr, who said: Musāwir al-Ḥimyarī narrated to me, from his mother, who said (8): “I heard Umm Salamah say, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to ʿAlī: “A believer will never hate you, and a hypocrite will never love you.”’”
This has also been reported from Umm Salamah through another chain with different wording, but it is not authentic.
Ibn ʿUqdah narrated—from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Bazygh; ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Suwār ibn Muṣʿab narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Yaḥyā al-Kharrāz, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever claims to believe in me and in what I have brought yet hates ʿAlī is a liar; he is not a believer.’” With this chain the report is fabricated and cannot be upheld, and Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah said: Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad al-Warrāq narrated to me, from ʿAlī ibn al-Kharrāz; I heard Abū Maryam al-Thaqafī [say] that he heard ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir say: “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say to ʿAlī: ‘Glad tidings to the one who loves you and affirms your right, and woe to the one who hates you and denies it.’”
