The report in its extended wording is classed as munkar; its chain of transmission and its content are both unsound. Al-Ḥākim mentioned no more than those two versions in his Mustadrak.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim also related it: through ʿAmmār ibn Khālid al-Wāsiṭī, from Isḥāq al-Azraq, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān, from Anas—this isnād is stronger than al-Ḥākim’s.
It was likewise transmitted by ʿAbd Allah ibn Ziyād Abū al-ʿAlā, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
“A roasted bird was presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon he said, ‘O Allah, bring to me the dearest of Your creation to You so that he may eat from this bird with me,’” and then narrated the rest in a similar fashion.
Another route comes through Muḥammad ibn Muṣfā: from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar, from Mūsā ibn Saʿd, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas, who recounted the same story.
ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Shāmī narrated it from Khalīl ibn Daʿlaj, from Qatādah, from Anas with similar wording.
Aḥmad ibn Yazīd al-Wartanīs transmitted it, from Zuhayr, from ʿUthmān al-Ṭawīl, from Anas, and he mentioned the narrative.
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Mūsā recorded it, from Sikin ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Maymūn Abū Khalaf, who said, “Anas ibn Mālik related it to me,” and he told the story. Al-Dāraquṭnī observed: “From the ḥadīth of Maymūn Abū Khalaf, Sikin ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz is its sole transmitter.”
It was also related by al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf ibn Qutaybah, from Bishr ibn al-Ḥusayn, from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī, from Anas.
Ibn Yaʿqūb Isḥāq ibn al-Fayḍ likewise reported: al-Maḍāʾ ibn al-Jārūd told us, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ziyād, that al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf summoned Anas ibn Mālik from Baṣrah and questioned him about ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. Anas replied: “A bird was gifted to the Prophet ﷺ; he ordered that it be cooked and prepared, then said, ‘O Allah, bring to me the most beloved of Your creation to You so that he may eat with me,’” and he recounted the remainder.
Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī (1) said: I heard al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Bakr say, “Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn Najīḥ narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Qāsim al-Naḥwī Abū ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from Abū al-Hindi, from Anas,” and he related the story.
Al-Ḥākim also transmitted it, through Muḥammad ibn Salīm, from Anas ibn Mālik, and he mentioned it.
Abū Yaʿlā (2) said: al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammād al-Warrāq told us; Mishhar ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Salaʿ—a trustworthy narrator—told us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar told us, from Ismāʿīl al-Suddi [from Anas ibn Mālik] that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a bird with him and said, “O Allah, bring to me the dearest of Your creation to You so that he may eat from this bird with me.” Abū Bakr came and he turned him away, then ʿUmar came and he turned him away, then ʿUthmān came and he turned him away; finally ʿAlī came and he allowed him in.
Abū al-Qāsim ibn ʿUqda said: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Yūsuf ibn ʿAdī narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn al-Mukhtār al-Kūfī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “A bird was gifted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ…”
