ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Hind al-Jamali and ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿĀmir al-Taghlibī—each of them reporting from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā—related the report with wording to the same effect.
Al-Dāraqutnī said: “It is gharīb; Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭahāwī alone transmits it from the two of them.”
Al-Ṭabarānī ⦗1⦘ said: “Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Kaysān al-Madīnī narrated to us in the year 290 AH; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAmr al-Bajalī narrated to us; Misʿar narrated to us, from Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif, from ʿUmayrah ibn Saʿd, who said:
‘I was present when ʿAlī was on the minbar appealing to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah: “Who among you heard the Messenger of Allah on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm say what he said?”
Twelve men stood up—among them Abū Hurayrah, Abū Saʿīd, and Anas ibn Mālik—and testified that they had heard the Messenger of Allah say:
“For whomever I am the mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and show enmity to whoever shows enmity to him.” ’ ”
The ḥadith was also transmitted by Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿUqda, the Shīʿī ḥadith-master, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAffān al-ʿĀmirī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Mūsā, from Qaṭn, from ʿAmr ibn Murrā and Saʿīd ibn Wahb, and from Zayd ibn Yuthayʿ, who said:
“We heard ʿAlī in the Rahbah say something similar. Thirteen men then rose and bore witness that the Messenger of Allah said:
‘For whomever I am the mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, show enmity to whoever shows enmity to him, love those who love him, hate those who hate him, grant victory to those who support him, and forsake those who forsake him.’ ”
When Abū Isḥāq finished relating this report he exclaimed, “O Abū Bakr, which elders were they?”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad ⦗2⦘ likewise transmitted it from ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm al-Āwdī, from Sharīk, from Abū Isḥāq in similar terms.
ʿAbd al-Razzāq ⦗3⦘ said: “From Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Wahb and ʿAbd Khayr, who both said:
‘We heard ʿAlī in the Rahbah of Kūfah say, “I adjure by Allah any man who heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘For whomever I am the mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā,’ to stand and testify.” Several of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah stood up and bore witness that they had indeed heard the Messenger of Allah say that.’ ”
Imām Aḥmad ⦗4⦘ said: “Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, who said: I heard Saʿīd ibn Wahb say:
‘ʿAlī appealed to the people, and five or six of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah stood up and testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, “For whomever I am the mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā.” ’ ”
Aḥmad ⦗5⦘ also said: “Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Laqiṭ al-Ashjaʿī narrated to us, from Riyāḥ ibn al-Ḥārith, who said:
‘A group came to ʿAlī in the Rahbah and said, “Peace be upon you, our mawlā.” He replied, “How can I be your mawlā?”’
