to Moses—except that there is no prophet after me?’
This isnād is likewise sound, yet it was not included by either of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Several transmitters have reported it from ʿĀʾishah bint Saʿd on the authority of her father. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir (1) said: “A number of Companions narrated this ḥadīth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, Muʿāwiyah, Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Jābir ibn Samurah, Abū Saʿīd, al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, Zayd ibn Arqam, Zayd ibn Abī Awfā, Nabīṭ ibn Sharīṭ, Ḥabashī ibn Janādah, Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith, Anas ibn Mālik, Abū al-Faḍl, Umm Salamah, Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, and Fāṭimah bint Ḥamzah. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir gathered these reports exhaustively in the biography of ʿAlī within his Tārīkh, excelling therein, benefiting others, and surpassing his peers, counterparts, and rivals. May the mercy (2) of the Lord of His servants be upon him on the Day of Summoning.
[The narration of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Abū Yaʿlā said:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar related to us; Sahl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ informed me, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that ʿUmar declared:
‘ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib has been granted three qualities; for me to possess even one of them would be dearer to me than red camels.’
People asked, ‘What are they, O Commander of the Faithful?’
He replied, ‘His marriage to Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; his residence in the mosque alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, enjoying therein whatever was lawful for him; and the banner on the Day of Khaybar.’ This has also been reported from ʿUmar through other chains.
[The narration of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Imām Aḥmad (3) narrated—through Wakīʿ, from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from ʿUmar ibn Asīd, from Ibn ʿUmar—who said:
‘In the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to say that the best of people are Abū Bakr, then ʿUmar; and indeed Ibn Abī Ṭālib has been given three gifts which, were they mine, would be dearer to me than red camels.’ He then mentioned those same three.
Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī (4) also transmitted—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, on the authority of Jābir—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī:
‘Are you not pleased to occupy toward me the position of Hārūn toward Mūsā, except that there is no prophet after me?’
Aḥmad (5) likewise narrated—from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘You are to me as Hārūn was to Mūsā—except that there is no prophet after me.’
Al-Ṭabarānī (6) reported it as well, by way of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ḥakīm, from Ibn ʿUmar, as a marfūʿ narration.
Sālamah ibn Kuhayl narrated—from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from his father, and from Umm Salamah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī:
‘Are you not pleased to be toward me as Hārūn was to Mūsā—except that there is no prophet after me?’
Sālamah added: I also heard a client of Banū Muhayb say, ‘I heard Ibn ʿAbbās declare that the Prophet ﷺ made the same statement.’
