the Byzantines at sea, and he slew so many of them that the face of the water was stained with blood (1)(2). Later, when ʿUthmān was besieged, Muḥammad b. Abī Ḥudhayfah overpowered him and drove him out of Egypt. He died this same year—having kept neutral toward both ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah—during the dawn prayer, between the two taslīms, may Allah be pleased with him.
ʿAmmār b. Yāsir (3), Abū al-Yaqẓān al-ʿAnsī, from ʿAns in Yemen and an ally of Banū Makhzūm, embraced Islam in its earliest days. He, his father, and his mother Sumayyah were all tortured for Allah’s sake, and it is said that he was the first to set aside a small mosque in his home for worship (4). He was present at Badr and every subsequent battle. We have already described the manner of his death at Ṣiffīn and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The rebellious faction will kill you” (5).
Al-Tirmidhī (6) transmits, through al-Ḥasan from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Paradise yearns for three: ʿAlī, ʿAmmār, and Salmān.”
In another report, narrated by al-Thawrī, Qays b. al-Rabīʿ, Shurayk al-Qāḍī and others, from Abū Isḥāq, from Hānīʾ b. Hānīʾ, from ʿAlī, it is related that ʿAmmār sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: “Welcome to the good and purified one” (7).
Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn said: Yaḥyā narrated to us—Naṣr recited to me—Sufyān al-Thawrī told us, from al-Aʿmash (8), from Abū ʿAmmār, from ʿAmr b. Shurāḥbīl (9), from a man among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “ʿAmmār has been filled with faith from the sole of his foot (10) up to the crown of his head (11).”
Yaḥyā b. Maʿlā also narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Muslim, from Masrūq, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “There is no one among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about whom I prefer to speak save ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:”
