The ḥadith of Ibn Masʿūd on this matter
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: The Imām Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Faqīh (1) narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Kharrāz, the reciter, narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbbād, the reciter, narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and went to the house of Umm Salamah. ʿAlī then arrived, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘O Umm Salamah, by Allah, this man will fight the breakers (al-nākithīn), the unjust (al-qāsitīn), and the renegades (al-māriqīn) after me.’” (2)
Another ḥadith from Abū Saʿīd on this matter
Al-Ḥākim said: Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Duḥaym al-Shaybānī narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥakam al-Ḥayrī narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abān narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Azdī narrated to us, from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to fight the breakers, the unjust, and the renegades. I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah! You have ordered us to fight them, but with whom shall we go?’ He replied, ‘With ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib; with him ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir will be killed.’” (3)
The ḥadith of Abū Ayyūb on this matter
Al-Ḥākim (4) said: Abū al-Ḥasan (5) ʿAlī ibn Ḥamshād (6) the adjudicator informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Dayzil narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Khiṭṭāb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥaṣīrah narrated to us, from Abū Ṣādiq, from Mukhnaf ibn Sulaym, who said:
“We went to Abū Ayyūb and said, ‘With your sword you fought the idolaters alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and now you have come to fight the Muslims?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to fight the breakers, the renegades, and the unjust.’”
Al-Ḥākim (7) also said: Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Bālawayh narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Shabīb al-Maʿmarī (8) narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us; Salamah ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us; Abū Zayd al-Aḥwal related to me, from ʿAtāb ibn Thaʿlabah—[Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī told me] during the caliphate of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—that he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to fight the breakers, the unjust, and the renegades alongside ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.”
