[Hadith Twelve: on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr]
Imām Aḥmad (1) said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, who said:
When the pledge of allegiance to Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah reached us, I travelled to al-Shām. I was told of a gathering being held by Nawf al-Bikālī, so I went to him. A man then arrived and the people drew back (2) from him. He was wrapped in a khamīṣah, a striped cloak, and—behold—it was ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. When Nawf saw him he fell silent, whereupon ʿAbd Allāh said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“There will be a hijrah after a hijrah; people will withdraw to the land to which Abraham migrated. No one will remain on the earth except its most wicked inhabitants; their land will cast them out and the Self of the Most Merciful will loathe them (3). The Fire will herd them together with the apes and swine: it will spend the night where they spend the night, rest where they rest at midday, and consume anyone who lags behind.”
He added: I also heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“A group of people will emerge from my community [from] the direction of the East. They will recite the Quran, yet it will not pass beyond their collar-bones. Whenever one of their ‘horns’ rises it is cut off—” and he counted this more than ten times—“each time a horn of theirs rises, it is severed, until the Antichrist appears among their last remnant.”
Abū Dāwūd (4) transmitted the opening portion of this report in the Book of Jihād of his Sunan through al-Qawārīrī, from Muʿādh ibn Hishām, from his father, from Qatādah, with this same chain [bi-hi]. The hadith of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd and that of the Commander of the Believers ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) have already been cited.
[Hadith Thirteen: on the authority of Abū Dharr]
Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj (5) said: Shaybān ibn Farrūkh narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us; Ḥumayd (6) ibn Hilāl narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣāmit, from Abū Dharr, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, after me among my community—or, there will be after me among my community—a people who recite the Quran but it does not go past their throats. They will dart out of the religion just as an arrow darts out of its prey; they will never return to it. [They are] the worst of creation and of all creatures.”
Ibn al-Ṣāmit said: I later met Rāfiʿ ibn ʿAmr al-Ghifārī, the brother of al-Ḥakam (7) al-Ghifārī, and asked him, “What of the report I heard from Abū Dharr—such and such?” He replied, “I too heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Al-Bukhārī did not relate this hadith.
