Aḥmad (2) said: Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ayyūb narrated to us, from Muḥammad, from ʿUbayda, from ʿAlī, who said:
The Khawārij were mentioned in ʿAlī’s presence and he remarked, “Among them is a man with a mukhdaj hand—that is, a maimed hand (or, he said, a mathdūn hand; or, he said, a mūdan hand). Were it not that you would become proud, I would tell you what Allah has promised—through the words of Muḥammad ﷺ—to those who kill them.”
I asked, “Did you hear this from Muḥammad ﷺ yourself?”
He replied, “Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!”
Aḥmad (5) also said: Wakīʿ narrated to us; Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim and Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us, from Ibn Sīrīn—both of them hearing it from him—from ʿUbayda, from ʿAlī, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“A people will emerge among whom is a man with a mūdan hand, or a mathdūn hand, or a mukhdaj (maimed) hand. Were it not that you would become boastful, I would inform you of what Allah has promised, on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ, to those who kill them.”
ʿUbayda said, “I asked ʿAlī, ‘Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’”
He answered, “Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! [Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!].”
Aḥmad (6) said: Yazīd narrated to us; Hishām narrated to us, from Muḥammad, from ʿUbayda, who said:
ʿAlī told the people of al-Nahrawān, “Among them is a man whose hand is mathdūn or mukhdaj (maimed). Were it not that you would become conceited, I would tell you what Allah has decreed, through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ, for the one who kills them.”
(ʿUbayda said:) “So I asked ʿAlī, ‘Did you hear it?’”
He replied, “Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah,” and he swore to it three times.
Aḥmad (9) said: Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAwn (10), from Muḥammad, who related that ʿUbayda said, “I will report to you only what I heard from him.” Muḥammad added, “ʿUbayda swore to us three times (11), and ʿAlī had sworn to him, saying, ‘Were it not that you would grow conceited…’”
