ʿAmmār,’ and ʿAmr would say to him, “What did you hear him say?” They would only confuse matters until Ibn Ḥawwāʾ arrived and said, “I heard him say:
Today I shall meet the loved ones—Muhammad and his party.”
ʿAmr replied, “You have spoken the truth; yes, you are indeed his companion (1).” Then he added (2), “Easy now. By Allah, your hands have gained nothing, and you have angered your Lord.”
Ibn Dīzayl also narrated—through Abū Yūsuf, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Bakr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kindī, from his father, from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAmmār:
“The rebellious faction will kill you.”
He likewise transmitted it, unattached, from several of the Successors, among them ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī al-Hudhayl, Mujāhid, Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, and Ḥabbah al-ʿUrnī.
He produced it with an elevated chain through Abān from Anas, and through ʿAmr ibn Shimr from Jābir al-Juʿfī, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Ḥudhayfah—raised to the Prophet—who said:
“Whenever ʿAmmār was given a choice between two matters, he chose the one that was more rightly guided.”
And, with the same chain, from ʿAmr ibn Shimr, from al-Sarrī, from Yaʿqūb ibn Rāqiṭ (3), it is reported that two men disputed over ʿAmmār’s spoils and his killing. They came to ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ seeking judgment (4). He said to them,
“Woe to you both! Leave me out of this, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—when Quraysh were mocking ʿAmmār—: ‘What business have they with ʿAmmār? ʿAmmār calls them to Paradise while they call him to the Fire; his killer and the one who strips him are in the Fire.’ ”
He went on, “It has reached me that Muʿāwiyah says, ‘The one who brought him out is the one who killed him,’ by which he deceives the people of Syria.”
Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥusayn said: Yaḥyā narrated to us; ʿAdī (5) ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us; al-ʿAwām ibn Ḥawshab narrated to us, from (6) al-Aswad ibn Masʿūd, from Ḥanẓalah ibn Khuwailid—who used to come and go between ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah—who said:
“While he was with Muʿāwiyah, two men came disputing about who had killed ʿAmmār. ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr said to them, ‘Let each of you willingly concede the killing of ʿAmmār to the other, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “The rebellious faction will kill him.” ’
Muʿāwiyah then said to ʿAmr, ‘Will you not restrain this madman of yours from us?’ He turned to ʿAbd Allah and asked, ‘Why, then, are you fighting on our side?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to obey my father as long as he is alive; I remain with you, but I do not fight.’ ”
