It was on Thursday, the tenth of Jumada al-Akhirah in the year 36 AH, that the event occurred, and Ṭalḥah was buried beside al-Kalāʾ. (1) He was sixty years old—others said a few years older. He was dark-complexioned, though some described him as fair; handsome of face, thick-haired, and closer to short in stature. His daily income amounted to one thousand dirhams.
Ḥammād ibn Salamah related from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Jadʿān, from his father, that a man saw Ṭalḥah in a dream saying, “Move me from my grave, for the water is harming me,” and this occurred on three successive nights. The man went to Ibn ʿAbbās, who at that time was governor of Basra, and informed him. (2) They purchased a house in Basra for ten thousand dirhams, transferred Ṭalḥah there from his grave, and found the side of his body that had lain by the water had turned green, while the rest of him was exactly as it had been on the day he was struck down.
Many texts record his virtues. Among them is what Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim narrated: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī told us; Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb ibn ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allah told us; my father related from his grandfather, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah, from his father, who said: “On the Day of Uḥud the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me Ṭalḥah al-Khayr (Ṭalḥah of Goodness); on the Day of al-ʿUsrah he called me Ṭalḥah al-Fayyāḍ (Ṭalḥah the Bountiful); and on the Day of Ḥunayn he called me Ṭalḥah al-Jūd (Ṭalḥah the Generous).” (3)
Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī (4) reported: Abū Kurayb narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, from Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā, from Mūsā and ʿĪsā the sons of Ṭalḥah, from their father. A number of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a Bedouin who had come asking about those who had “fulfilled their pledge,” “Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” So he questioned the Prophet in the mosque, and the Prophet turned away from him. He asked again, and the Prophet turned away once more. Then I glanced through the door of the mosque, wearing green garments, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Where is the questioner?” He replied, “Here I am.” The Prophet said, “He is one of those who have fulfilled their pledge.”
Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī said: Dāʾūd ibn Rushayd narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm (5) narrated to us; al-Ṣalt ibn Dīnār narrated to us, from Abū Naḍrah, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Whoever wishes to look at a martyr walking upon his own feet, let him look at Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allah.” (6)
Al-Tirmidhī (7) likewise reported: Abū Saʿīd al-Ashaj narrated to us; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Manṣūr al-ʿAnazī (8)—his name
