Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

“We are indeed truthful.

Depart with your household in a part of the night; walk behind them; let none of you look back; and go where you are commanded.

We delivered to him the decree that the last remnant of those people would be cut off at dawn.

The townsfolk came exultant.

He said, ‘These are my guests, so do not disgrace me;

fear Allah and do not shame me.’

They answered, ‘Did we not forbid you to protect anyone?’

He said, ‘Here are my daughters, if you must act.’

By your life, they wandered on in their blind intoxication;

and the Cry seized them at sunrise.

We turned the town upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.

Surely in this are signs for those who read the signs;

and it still lies on a well-trodden road.

Indeed, in this is a sign for the believers.”
(15:64–77)

And the Exalted says in Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ:

“The people of Lot, too, rejected the messengers;

when their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of Allah?

I am a trustworthy messenger to you;

so be mindful of Allah and obey me.

I ask of you no reward; my reward rests only with the Lord of all worlds.

Do you, of all people, lust after males

and abandon the spouses your Lord created for you? You are a people who exceed all bounds.’

They said, ‘If you do not desist, Lot, you will surely be expelled.’

He said, ‘I loathe your deeds.

Lord, save me and my family from what they do.’

So We saved him and all his family—

except for an old woman who stayed behind—

and We destroyed the others,

raining upon them a rain—how evil was the rain that fell upon those who had been warned!

In that there is indeed a sign, yet most of them do not believe;

and your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful.”
(26:160–175)

And He, Exalted, says in Sūrat al-Naml:

“Lot, when he said to his people, ‘Will you persist in this obscenity with your eyes wide open?

Do you really approach men out of lust instead of women? You are indeed an ignorant people.’

But his people’s only answer was, ‘Expel the family of Lot from your town; they are people who keep themselves pure.’

So We saved him and his family—except for his wife; We decreed that she should be among those who stayed behind—

and We rained upon them a rain. How evil was the rain that fell upon those who had been warned.”
(27:54–58)

And He says in Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt:

“Lot, when he said to his people, ‘You commit an obscenity that no one in all the worlds has ever preceded you in.

Must you really approach men, cut off travellers on the road, and commit vile deeds in your gatherings?’ His people’s only reply was, ‘Bring down upon us Allah’s punishment, if you are telling the truth.’

He said, ‘My Lord, help me against these people who spread corruption.’

When Our messengers came to Abraham with good news they said, ‘We are going to destroy the people of this town; its inhabitants are indeed wrongdoers.’

He said, ‘But Lot lives there.’ They said, ‘We know very well who is in it. We shall save him and his household—except for his wife; she will be among those who stay behind.’

When Our messengers came to Lot he was distressed on their account and felt powerless. They said, ‘Do not fear and do not grieve; we shall save you and your household—except for your wife; she will be among those who stay behind.

We are about to bring down upon the people of this town a punishment from heaven because of their disobedience.’

We have surely left there a clear sign for people who use their reason.”
(29:28–35)

And He says in Sūrat al-Ṣāffāt:

“Lot was indeed one of the messengers;

We saved him and all his family—

except for an old woman who stayed behind—

then We destroyed the rest.

You pass by their ruins morning and night—will you not take heed?”
(37:133–138)

And He says in Sūrat al-Dhāriyāt, after recounting the story of Abraham’s guests and the glad tidings of a knowledgeable son:

“He asked, ‘So what is your mission, O messengers?’

They said, ‘We have been sent to a people who are guilty,

to hurl upon them stones of clay,

marked by your Lord for those who exceed all bounds.’

Then We brought out of the town every believer we found;

but We found there only one house of Muslims,

and We left within it a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.”
(51:31–37)
