Imam Aḥmad (1) said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Fāṭimah bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to me, saying: My mother told me that she once questioned ʿĀʾishah after her uncle had sent her, instructing, “Say to her: One of your sons sends you his greetings of peace and asks you about ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, for the people have begun to revile him.” ʿĀʾishah replied, “May Allah curse whoever curses him. By Allah, he was sitting in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leaning his back against me, and Jibrīl was revealing the Quran to him. The Prophet kept saying to him, ‘Write, O ʿUthaym.’” ʿĀʾishah concluded, “Allah would never grant such a station except to one honored by Allah and His Messenger.”
Imam Aḥmad also transmitted it: from Yūnus, from ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm (2) al-Yashkurī, from his mother, who said that she asked ʿĀʾishah at the Kaʿbah about ʿUthmān, and she gave the same answer.

Abū Bakr asked, “Will I live to witness it?” He replied, “No!” ʿUmar asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will I witness it?” He said, “No!” ʿUthmān then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will I be present for it?” He said, “It is through you that they will be tested.”
al-Bazzār said: We do not know this to be transmitted except through this chain.
