Ibn ʿAsākir (1) likewise transmitted it through the chain of al-Minhāl ibn Baḥr (2), from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from her.
Ibn Usāmah related it from al-Jarīrī. Abū Bakr al-ʿAdawī told me, “I asked ʿĀʾishah,” and he reported from her something similar to what has preceded; al-Faraj ibn Faḍālah alone preserved this wording.
Khuṣayf also narrated it, from Mujāhid, from ʿĀʾishah, with a comparable wording.
Imam Aḥmad (3) said: Muḥammad ibn Kunāsah al-Asadī, Abū Yaḥyā (4), narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Saʿīd (5) narrated to us, from his father, who said:
“It reached me that ʿĀʾishah said, ‘I never listened in on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except once. ʿUthmān came to him in the full heat of midday (nahr al-ẓuḥrah) (6), and I assumed he had come concerning the womenfolk. Jealousy prompted me to listen, and I heard him say:
“Allah will clothe you with a shirt; my community will urge you to remove it, so do not remove it.”
When I later saw ʿUthmān granting them everything they requested except that he would step down, I knew it was the covenant the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had placed upon him.’”
[Another chain]
al-Ṭabarānī said: Muṭlab ibn Saʿīd al-Azdī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Rabīʿah ibn Sayf, who said:
“We were with Shufay (7) al-Aṣbaḥī when he said, ‘ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar narrated to us:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned and said: ‘O ʿUthmān, Allah (8) has clothed you with a shirt, and the people will want you to take it off; do not take it off. By Allah, if you remove it you will not see Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.’”’”
Abū Yaʿlā (9) likewise reported it through the chain of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar from his sister Ḥafṣah, Mother of the Believers. The wording of the text contains some peculiarity, and Allah knows best.
