of Riḍwān took place after ʿUthmān had gone to Mecca, so the Prophet ﷺ clasped his own right hand and said, “This is the hand of ʿUthmān.” He then struck it against his left hand and declared, “This pledge is on behalf of ʿUthmān.” Ibn ʿUmar said to the Egyptian, “Take that answer with you now.” Al-Bukhārī transmitted this narration alone; Muslim did not record it.

Imām Aḥmad (1) said: “Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Zāʾidah narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from Shaqīq (2), who said:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf met al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbā. Al-Walīd (3) said to him, ‘Why do I see you avoiding the Commander of the Believers, ʿUthmān?’
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān replied, ‘Tell him from me that I did not flee on the Day of ʿAynayn’—ʿĀṣim said: that is, the Day of Uḥud—‘I did not stay behind on the Day of Badr, and I have not abandoned the practice of ʿUmar.’
Al-Walīd conveyed this to ʿUthmān, who said, ‘As for his saying that I fled on the Day of ʿAynayn—how can he reproach me for a sin that Allah has already pardoned? Allah the Exalted says: “Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of something they had earned; yet Allah has pardoned them.” [Āl ʿImrān 3:155]
‘As for his saying that I stayed behind on the Day of Badr, I was tending to Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was ill, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted me the share of a man who had been present—whoever is allotted his share by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is counted as having attended.
‘And regarding his claim that I have not abandoned ʿUmar’s practice—by Allah, neither he nor I have the strength to follow it completely. Go back to him and tell him that.’
[Another Report]
Al-Bukhārī (4) said: “Aḥmad ibn Shabīb ibn Saʿīd (5) narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from Yūnus.” Ibn Shihāb said:
ʿUrwah informed me that ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAdī ibn al-Khiyār told him that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAbd Yaghūth said, ‘What is preventing you from speaking to ʿUthmān about his brother al-Walīd? The people have spoken much about him.’ So I approached ʿUthmān when he came out to pray.
I said, ‘I have a request of you—it is a sincere counsel for you.’
He said, ‘O man, keep away from me.’
Abū ʿAbd Allah—Maʿmar—said: He meant, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you.’ So I withdrew and returned to the two men. Then a messenger from ʿUthmān arrived, so I went to him. He asked, ‘What is your counsel?’
I said, ‘Allah sent Muḥammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed to him the Book. You were among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger, migrated the two migrations, accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and witnessed his guidance. Now the people have spoken frequently about the matter of al-Walīd.’
He asked, ‘Did you meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ I replied (6), ‘No, but knowledge of him has reached me as surely as a maiden receives what comes to her while she remains behind her curtain.’
He said, ‘To proceed: Allah sent Muḥammad with the truth, and I was among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger. I believed in what he was sent with, migrated the two migrations as you have mentioned, accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and pledged my allegiance to him. By Allah, I never disobeyed him nor betrayed him until Allah took him in death.’
