—the caliphate of ʿUthmān, which lasted twelve years, was included within those thirty, and on this point there is no dispute among the qualified scholars—just as the Master of the Messengers ﷺ and all of his Companions had foretold.
[Another ḥadith]
This is the report transmitted through multiple chains from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in which he testified that the Ten were promised Paradise (and ʿUthmān is explicitly one of them, by the Prophet’s ﷺ own wording).
[Another ḥadith]
Al-Bukhārī (1) said: Muḥammad ibn Ḥātim (2) ibn Bazīʿ narrated to us; Shādhān narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ we did not place anyone ahead of Abū Bakr, then ʿUmar, then ʿUthmān; after that we left the rest of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ without ranking them.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ followed him in narrating it from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Al-Bukhārī alone recorded it. It was also related by Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh and al-Faraj ibn Faḍālah, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar.
Abū Yaʿlā (4) likewise transmitted it—from Abū Maʿmar, from Yazīd ibn Hārūn, from al-Layth, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Ibn ʿUmar with the same wording.
[Another chain from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still among us and his Companions were many, we used to count: Abū Bakr, then ʿUmar, then ʿUthmān—then we would remain silent.”
[A further chain from Ibn ʿUmar with different wording]
The ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār (7) said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī and ʿUqbah ibn Mukarram narrated to us; they said: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from
