Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

His biographers remark that “his students were legion,”(1) that “multitudes took knowledge from him,”(2) and that “he graduated a great many pupils.”(3)

Yet these very writers who introduce Ibn Kathīr and chronicle his life and achievements omit the names of his disciples, mentioning only his student Ibn Ḥajjī! Where, one wonders, have all those countless learners and seekers gone?

In our estimation—and Allah knows best—the great shaykhs and senior scholars fall into three categories:

  1. Those who occupy themselves with the general scholarly arena: they deliver public and private lessons, hold administrative and leadership posts, and devote their homes and private hours to writing and composition.

  2. Those who, while teaching both publicly and privately, dedicate all their time to a select cadre of gifted students and devotees. These pupils imbibe the shaykh’s sciences and methodology, bear his name, and disseminate his call and way among the people.

  3. Those who combine both aims, achieving widespread public influence while also producing distinguished, capable disciples.

Our learned master Ibn Kathīr seems to belong to the first category: during his lifetime people busied themselves with his lessons, and after his death they have been engrossed in his books and writings.

It is also worth noting that the biographical compendia usually list the pupils of exceptionally long-lived teachers, for such shaykhs possess higher chains of transmission. Ibn Kathīr was not among that group; compare, for instance, the numerous names cited for those who studied under al-Ḥajjār precisely because he lived to a great age and had elevated isnāds.

Even so, we can still locate a number of students whom the sources explicitly record as having studied with, heard from, or obtained an ijāzah from the eminent Ibn Kathīr. They include:

  1. Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Sand ibn Naʿīm, Shams al-Dīn Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Lakhmī, d. 792 AH. He was licensed to issue fatwas by al-ʿAlāʾī and by Ibn Kathīr.(4)

  2. Yaḥyā ibn Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā, Muḥyī al-Dīn Abū Zakariyyā al-Raḥabī, d. 794 AH:
