Al-Wāqidī (1) said: Ibn Abī Sabrah narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Zayd, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, who stated: On the day ʿUthmān was killed he had with his treasurer thirty million five hundred thousand dirhams and one hundred [and fifty] thousand dinars; all of it was plundered and lost. He also left one thousand camels at al-Rabadha and several charitable endowments he had established—Bir Arīs, Khaybar, and Wādī al-Qurā—which together yielded two hundred thousand dinars. (As for Bir Rūmah, he had bought it during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime and endowed it for public benefit.)
Imām Aḥmad (2) reported: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us, Arṭāʾah ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us, Abū ʿAwn al-Anṣārī narrated: ʿUthmān said to Ibn Masʿūd, “Will you desist from what has reached me concerning you?” Ibn Masʿūd offered some excuse, whereupon ʿUthmān said, “I have heard and memorised (the matter), and it is not as you have heard. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘A ruler will be killed and a usurper will spring forth. I am that slain ruler, not ʿUmar; for ʿUmar was killed by a single man, whereas many will band together against me.’”
Aḥmad also said (4): Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl, from Qays, who said: Abū Sahla told me that on the Day of the Siege ʿUthmān declared, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me with a covenant, and I shall remain patient upon it.” Qays added, “They understood that it referred to that very day.” Al-Tirmidhī (5) recorded the same report through Wakīʿ and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid. In the Musnad of Abū Yaʿlā, through the chain of Abū Sahla, it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿUthmān: “You will face a trial after me, so do not fight.”

Al-Aʿmash narrated from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Ḥudhayfah, that he said: “The first of the tribulations is the killing of ʿUthmān, and the last of them is the Dajjāl.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir (6) likewise transmitted—through Shabābah, from Ḥafṣ ibn Murriq al-Bāhilī, from Ḥajjāj ibn Abī ʿUthmān (7) al-Ṣawwāf, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Ḥudhayfah—the words: “The first of the tribulations is the killing of ʿUthmān, and the last is the emergence of the Dajjāl. By Him in whose hand is my soul, no man dies while harbouring even a grain’s weight of approval for ʿUthmān’s murder except that he will follow the Dajjāl if he encounters him; and if he does not encounter him, he will believe in him while in his grave.”
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā and others said: (Muḥammad ibn Saʿd informed us), ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim al-Kilābī told us, Abū al-Ashhab narrated to us, ʿAwf related to me, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, that Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān said:
