—and twenty-seven years, according to the People of the Book. Abraham, peace be upon him, mourned her and delivered an elegy for her—may Allah have mercy on her. He then purchased from a man of the Hittites named Ephron son of Zohar a cave for four hundred silver pieces and there he buried Sarah.
They relate that Abraham next sought a wife for his son Isaac, so he married him to Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor son of Terah. He dispatched his servant, who brought her from her homeland together with her nurse and maidservants mounted on camels.
They also say that Abraham, peace be upon him, later married Keturah, who bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Shayaq, and Shuḥ. Accounts are given of the progeny that each of these sons of Keturah produced.
Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted—on the authority of a number of the early generations and drawing on the reports of the People of the Book—many narrations describing how the Angel of Death came to Abraham, peace be upon him; Allah knows best as to their authenticity.
It has been said that he died suddenly, as did David and Solomon, though the People of the Book and others report otherwise.
They state that Abraham, peace be upon him, fell ill and died at the age of one hundred and seventy-five—others say one hundred and ninety—and was buried in the aforementioned cave at Hebron among the Hittites, beside his wife Sarah, in the field of Ephron the Hittite. His burial was carried out by Ishmael and Isaac—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon them all.
There is also a report indicating that he lived two hundred years, as cited by Ibn al-Kalbī.
Abū Ḥātim Ibn Ḥibbān said in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1): “Al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muḥammad al-Jundī in Mecca informed us; ʿAlī b. Ziyād al-Laḥjī narrated to us; Abū Qurrah narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
‘Abraham was circumcised with an adze when he was one hundred and twenty years old, and he lived for eighty years thereafter.’”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir also recorded it through ʿIkrimah b. Ibrāhīm and Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn al-ʿĀmirī, from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, as a statement halted (mawqūf) on him (2).
Ibn Ḥibbān then said (3): “Here is the report that refutes (4) the claim of those who allege that attributing this ḥadīth to the Prophet is a mistake.” He related: “Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Junayd in Bust informed us; Qutaybah b. Saʿīd narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
‘Abraham was circumcised when he reached one hundred and twenty years of age; he lived for eighty years thereafter, and he was circumcised with an adze.’”
