secure and unassailable; I would have been the first to approve of it and lend you my support. Yet you did not speak until the belt had already snapped its twin straps,(1) the flood had risen to the very brink,(2) and the humbled man had accepted a humiliating course. By Allah, to persist in a sin while seeking forgiveness for it is better than a repentance that people fear may be withdrawn. Had you wished, you could simply have resolved upon repentance,(3) without declaring your fault to us—and there now stands at your door a throng of people as massive as mountains.”

ʿUthmān said, “(Rise) go out to them and address them, for I am too ashamed to speak to them myself.”

So Marwān went to the door, and the crowd was so dense that people were climbing over one another. He said, “What is the matter with you? It is as though you have come to plunder. How vile are those faces!(4) (each man grabbing his companion by the ear) save whomever I choose! You want to wrest our authority from our hands—leave us! (By Allah, if you attempt to assail us)(5) you will meet with something that will grieve you, and you will not praise its outcome. Go back to your houses, for by Allah we still hold firmly what is ours.”

The crowd dispersed, but some of them went to ʿAlī and told him what had happened. ʿAlī, angry, came in to ʿUthmān and said, “Are you not yet satisfied with Marwān, nor he with you, unless he turns you away from your religion and your reason? You are like the camel of a travelling woman,(6) going wherever it is led. By Allah, Marwān has no sound judgment—neither for his religion nor for himself. I swear I see him driving you to the water-hole and never bringing you back from it.(7) After this visit I will not return to admonish you again. You have ruined your own market,(8) and you have been overpowered in your affair.”

When ʿAlī left, Nāʾilah came in to ʿUthmān and said, “Shall I speak or keep silent?” He answered, “Speak.” She said:

“I have heard ʿAlī say he will not return to you, and you have obeyed Marwān, who drags you(9) wherever he wishes.” ʿUthmān asked, “Then what am I to do?” She replied, “Fear Allah alone, without partner, and follow the sunnah of your two predecessors. The moment you obey Marwān he will have you killed, for Marwān enjoys with no one either standing,(10) respect, or love. Send for ʿAlī and make peace with him, for he is your kinsman and he is

(1) In MS A: balagha (“it reaches”). Both variants occur as this proverb – see Muʿjam al-Amthāl al-ʿArabiyya by Riyad ʿAbd al-Hamīd Murād (vol. 1: 201, 377, 442), which lists its sources. The proverb denotes a matter reaching its limit in hardship and difficulty. It also appears in Jamhara al-Amthāl by al-ʿAskarī (vol. 1: 220). (2) In MS A: wa-khalafa. The proverb appears in Muʿjam al-Amthāl al-ʿArabiyya (vol. 1: 22), where its sources are cited; it likewise denotes a matter reaching its utmost in difficulty and hardship. (3) In MS A: taqrīb al-tawba (“the approach of repentance”), which here agrees with al-Ṭabarī (Tarikh al-Ṭabarī, vol. 4: 362). (4) shāhat al-wujūh: “the faces became ugly.” Lisan al-ʿArab (lemma shāha). (5) In MS A the space corresponding to the parentheses is blank, about the length of three words. (6) al-ẓaʿīna: the howdaj in which a woman may or may not be placed. Lisan al-ʿArab (lemma ẓaʿana). (7) ṣadr is the opposite of ward, meaning “to return.” One who begins a matter then fails to complete it is said “yurwadu” rather than “yusdar.” Lisan al-ʿArab (lemma ṣadra). (8) As in MSS A and T and in Tarikh al-Ṭabarī (vol. 4: 362): sharrafaka, which is perhaps the most plausible reading. (9) The addition is from Tarikh al-Ṭabarī (vol. 4: 362). (10) In MS T: ʿinda Allāh (“with God”); in Tarikh al-Ṭabarī: ʿinda al-nās (“with the people”).
