Abu Layla ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Kaʿb (1) ibn ʿAmr al-Ansari fought at the Battle of Uhud and every engagement thereafter, except for Tabuk, from which he stayed behind because of poverty (2). He was one of the “weepers” who have been mentioned.
Sawdah bint Zamʿah (3) al-Qurashiyyah al-ʿĀmiriyyah, Mother of the Believers, was the first woman the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married after Khadijah—may Allah be pleased with her. She was devoted to fasting and night prayer. It is said that there was a certain sharpness in her temperament, and when she grew old the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished to divorce her—some say he actually did so. She pleaded, “O Messenger of Allah, do not leave me, and I will give my day to ʿĀ’ishah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore kept her and accepted that arrangement.
Concerning this Allah—Exalted is He—revealed: “If a woman fears rebellion or aversion on the part of her husband, there is no blame on the two of them if they make terms of reconciliation between themselves; and reconciliation is better” (Qur’an 4:128).
ʿĀ’ishah said, “It was revealed about Sawdah bint Zamʿah.” Sawdah died during the caliphate of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab.
Hind bint ʿUtbah (4) is said to have died in ʿUmar’s caliphate; others maintain she passed away earlier, as noted above—Allah knows best (5).
