His Physical Appearance (may Allah be pleased with him)
He was a tall man, bald, ambidextrous, with strikingly contrasted eyes, of brown complexion (1)—although it is also said that he was extremely fair with a reddish tinge—his teeth even and well-spaced (2). He would tint his beard a yellow hue and treat his hair with henna.
Differences over his age at the time of death (may Allah be pleased with him) amount to ten opinions:
Ibn Jarir said: Zayd ibn Akhzam (3) narrated to us, Abu Qutaybah narrated to us, from Jarir ibn Hazim, from Ayyub, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab was killed at the age of fifty-five.” Al-Darawardi transmitted the same from ʿUbayd Allah (4), from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar. The same was stated by ʿAbd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj, from al-Zuhri, and by Ahmad from Hushaym, from ʿAli ibn Zayd, from Salim ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar.
Another report from Nafiʿ puts his age at fifty-six.
Ibn Jarir added: Others said he was fifty-three; this reached me from Hisham ibn Muhammad.
He then related from ʿAmir al-Shaʿbī that he died at sixty-three.
I say: A similar range of opinions was mentioned earlier concerning the age of al-Ṣiddīq.
It is also reported from Qatadah that he died at sixty-one;
from Ibn ʿUmar and al-Zuhri, sixty-five;
from Ibn ʿAbbas, sixty-six.
Ibn Jarir likewise transmitted from Aslam, the freedman of ʿUmar, that he died at sixty. Al-Waqidi (5) commented, “This is the most reliable view in our estimation.”
Al-Madāʾinī held that he died at fifty-seven.
