Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Who will excuse me for a reckless fool
who plots for himself the worst design? (1)
I seek his life while he seeks my death—
take refuge with your comrade of Murad!

He is credited with a single hadith on the talbiyah, narrated from him by Shuraḥīl ibn al-Qaʿqaʿ, who said:
“We used to say in the Days of Ignorance, when we raised the talbiyah (2):

At Your service, in veneration and pleading excuse;
here is Zubayd who has come to You by force.
On lean, swift mounts that dart ahead,
they cleave sandy flats and rugged peaks.
They have left the idols deserted and bare.”

ʿAmr then said: “Today, praise be to Allah, we say—as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us:

Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk; labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk; inna al-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulk, lā sharīka lak.”

al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī (3) was the Prophet’s governor over Bahrain; Abū Bakr and then ʿUmar confirmed him in that post. It was mentioned earlier that he died in 14 AH. Others maintain that he lived until 21 AH: ʿUmar dismissed him from Bahrain, appointing Abū Hurayrah in his stead, and later commissioned him over Kūfa. He died before reaching it, on his return from Hajj, as we have already noted—Allah knows best. In Dalāʾil an-Nubuwwah we have recorded his crossing with his army over the surface of the water and the other marvels granted to him—praise be to Allah.

al-Nuʿmān ibn Muqarrin ibn ʿĀʾidh al-Muzanī (4) was the commander at the battle of Nihāwand, a distinguished Companion. He arrived with four hundred riders of Muzaynah, then settled in Basra. ʿUmar al-Farūq dispatched him as commander of the forces to Nihāwand, and Allah granted a great conquest at his hands. Allah gave him mastery in those lands, placed the necks of those people under his control, and through him secured the Muslims there until the Day of Summoning. He granted him victory in this world and on the Day when witnesses will stand, and after showing him what he wished, bestowed upon him a magnificent martyrdom—that is the ultimate aspiration. (5)

He was among those of whom Allah Most High says in His Clear Book, His Straight Path:

“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, they kill and are killed—a true promise binding upon Him …” (Qur’an 9:111).

(3) The biography of al-‘Alā’ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī is found in al-Isti‘āb (2:1085), Jāmi‘ al-Uṣūl (14:536), Asad al-Ghabah (4:74–75), Tahdhīb al-Asmā’ wa al-Lughāt (1:341–342), and al-Isābah (2:497). (4) The life of al-Nu‘mān ibn Muqarrin appears in Tārīkh Khalīfa (p. 149), al-Isti‘āb (3:1505), Jāmi‘ al-Uṣūl (1:411), Asad al-Ghabah (5:342), and Sīr A‘lām al-Nubalā’ (2:356). In Jāmi‘ al-Uṣūl his name is vocalized Muqarrin (damma on mīm, fatḥa on qāf, shadda on rā’ with kasra, plus final nūn). In edition A it reads al-Nu‘mān ibn Muqarrin al-Muzanī, omitting the epithet ‘Aidh. In Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb (no. 564) some have mistakenly identified him with al-Nu‘mān ibn ‘Amr ibn Muqarrin; the latter was his nephew and a tābi‘ī. (5) In edition A: wa-abāḥ (‘and he permitted’).
