Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (1):
ʿAbd Allāh b. Yūsuf al-Iṣbahānī related to us; Abū Saʿīd b. al-Aʿrābī related to us; he said: I found in my notebook, written in my own hand, a report from Abū Dāwūd: Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd narrated to us, Ḥammād narrated to us, Yūnus narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan: that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was brought Chosroes’ fur-lined cloak, which was set down before him while Suraqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum was among the gathering. ʿUmar thereupon tossed to him the two bracelets of Chosroes son of Hurmuz, so he put them on and they reached up to his shoulders. When ʿUmar saw them on Suraqah’s arms he exclaimed, “al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah)! The bracelets of Chosroes (2) son of Hurmuz are on the arms of Suraqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum, a Bedouin from Banū Mudlij!” And he went on to recount the remainder of the report. That is how al-Bayhaqī transmitted it.
He then quoted al-Shāfiʿī as saying: “ʿUmar dressed Suraqah in them only because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had said to Suraqah, while looking at his forearms, ‘It is as though I can see you wearing the bracelets of Chosroes.’” (Al-Shāfiʿī added that ʿUmar, when he placed the bracelets on Suraqah, said:) “Say: Allāhu akbar (Allah is Most Great).” He said it, and then ʿUmar said, “Say: al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) who stripped them from Chosroes son of Hurmuz and put them on Suraqah b. Mālik, a Bedouin from Banū Mudlij.”
Al-Haytham b. ʿAdī (3) reported: Usāmah b. Zayd al-Laythī narrated to us; al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr narrated to us: During the days of al-Qādisiyyah Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ sent to ʿUmar Chosroes’ cloak, sword, belt, bracelets, trousers, tunic, crown, and shoes. ʿUmar looked over the faces of the people, and the tallest and stoutest of them was Suraqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum. He said, “O Suraqah, rise and put them on.” Suraqah said, “I desired them, so I rose and put them on.” ʿUmar then told him, “Turn around,” so I turned; he said, “Come back,” so I came back. Then he remarked, “Splendid, splendid! A Bedouin from Banū Mudlij clad in Chosroes’ cloak, trousers, sword, belt, crown, and shoes! O Suraqah b. Mālik, there might come a day when, were you to appear adorned with this property of Chosroes and the household of Chosroes, it would be an honor for you and your people. Now take it off.” So I removed it.
Then ʿUmar said, “O Allah, You withheld this from Your Messenger and Prophet, who was dearer to You and more honored before You than I am; You withheld it from Abū Bakr, who was dearer to You and more honored before You than I am; yet You have given it to me. I seek refuge in You lest You have granted it to me only to entrap me.” He wept until those present felt pity for him, and then said to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, “I adjure you—sell it and distribute its price before nightfall.”
Saif b. ʿUmar al-Tamīmī (4) related that when ʿUmar gained possession of those garments and jewels, the sword of Chosroes was brought (5) together with several other swords, among them the sword of al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, Chosroes’ governor over al-Ḥīrah; whereupon ʿUmar said, “al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah).”
