he turned toward Jerusalem and said,
“Peace be upon you, O Syria—peace with no meeting after it, save that I bid you the farewell of one who is parting. Never again will a Roman return to you except in fear, until the ill-fated child is born—would that he had never been born! How sweet his deed will be, yet how bitter its consequence for the Romans!”
Heraclius then travelled on until he reached Constantinople, where he settled and confirmed his kingship. There he questioned one of the men accompanying him—a man who had once been a prisoner among the Muslims—and said,
“Inform me about these people.”
The man replied, “I shall describe them to you as though you were watching them: they are horsemen by day, monks by night; they never consume anything held in trust without paying for it, they never enter a place save with the greeting of peace, and they remain steadfast against whoever combats them until they have overcome him.”
Heraclius said, “If you have spoken the truth, they will surely take possession (1) of the very ground beneath these two feet of mine (2).”
I say: The Muslims besieged Constantinople in the Umayyad period but did not capture it; yet the city will be conquered by the Muslims at the end of time, as we shall explain in the Book of Battles. This will occur shortly before the appearance of the Dajjāl, according to the authentic hadiths of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (3) and in other collections of the leading Imams. All praise and favour belong to Allah.
Allah has forbidden the Romans ever again to rule the whole of Syria until the end of time, as is established by the hadith found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (4) on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, who reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“When Chosroes perishes, there will be no Chosroes after him; and when Caesar perishes, there will be no Caesar after him. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, their treasures will most certainly be spent in the path of Allah—exalted is He—” (5).
What he foretold—blessings and peace be upon him—has already come to pass, as you have seen, and what he definitively proclaimed will likewise unfold: the dominion of the Caesars will never return to Syria. For among the Arabs ‘Caesar’ is a generic title applied to anyone who rules Syria along with the lands of Rome, and such rule will never revert to them.
