Yazīd ibn Qays ibn al-Khaṭīm al-Anṣārī al-Ẓafārī (1) fought at Uḥud and in all the subsequent engagements. He was killed on the Day of the Bridge, having already suffered many wounds at Uḥud. His father was a well-known poet.
Abū ʿUbayd ibn Masʿūd al-Thaqafī—the commander on the Day of the Bridge and famous for having fallen there—was battered by an elephant until it killed him, may Allah be pleased with him, after he had cut off its trunk with his sword, as noted above.
Abū Quḥāfah al-Taymī, the father of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, also died this year, may Allah be pleased with him.
Hind bint ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah ibn ʿAbd Shams ibn Umayyah al-Umawiyyah, the mother of Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, was one of the distinguished women of Quraysh, renowned for her judgment, cleverness, and leadership among her people. She was present at Uḥud with her husband and urged the killing of the Muslims that day. When Ḥamzah was slain she mutilated his body, took a piece of his liver, and chewed it but could not swallow it, for Ḥamzah had killed her father and brother at Badr. After all of this she embraced Islam, and her Islam was excellent, in the Year of the Conquest—one night after her husband’s conversion.

He said, “Since you have done what you have done, do not go alone.” So she went to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—some say to her brother Abū Ḥudhayfah ibn ʿUtbah—who accompanied her. She entered veiled (3).
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted her pledge together with the other women, he said:
“that you shall not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery.”
She said, “Would a free woman commit adultery?”
“and that you shall not kill your children.”
She said, “We raised them when they were small—shall we kill them when they are grown?!” At this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled.
“and that you shall not bring any calumny you invent between your hands and your feet, and that you shall not disobey me (4).”
She quickly added, “in what is right.”
He said, “In what is right (5).” This testifies to her eloquence and firmness.
She also said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “By Allah, O Muḥammad, there was no household on the face of the earth I wished more to be humbled than yours; yet by Allah, today there is no household on the face of the earth I wish more to be honored than yours.”
He replied, “So it is, by Him in Whose hand is my soul.” She then complained of Abū Sufyān’s stinginess, whereupon he instructed her to take what would suffice her and suffice
