• Iyās ibn Wadiʿah (1);
• Asʿad (2) ibn Yarbuʿ;
• Saʿd ibn Ḥārithah (3);
• Saʿd (4) ibn Ḥamān;
• Mukhāshan (5) of Ḥimyar (6);
• Salamah ibn Masʿūd—though some say: Masʿūd ibn Sinān;
• Ḍumrah ibn ʿIyāḍ;
• ʿAbd Allah ibn Anas (7);
• and Abū Ḥabbah ibn Ghaziyyah al-Māzinī.
(1) In the printed edition (tiba‘a) and in al-Dhahabī’s Tarīkh al-Islām in his own hand it reads “wadafa,” i.e. that reading is also attested. Ibn al-Athīr in Asad al-Ghaba preferred “wadafa” with an f.
(2) In both the original and the printed editions—as well as in al-Dhahabī’s own copy of Tarīkh al-Islām (folio 187 of Aya Sophia MS 3005)—the text appears as here. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in al-Istīʿāb (1:95), Ibn Ḥajar in al-Isāba (1:50), and others reproduce it; yet Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (1:82), Ibn al-Athīr (Asad al-Ghaba, p. 88), and Ibn Ḥajar (al-Isāba, 1:35) have “Asʿad ibn Yarbuʿ al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī al-Sāʿidī,” all noting that he was martyred at al-Yamāma, without commenting on this variation in names. Are they two brothers who fell at al-Yamāma, or simply divergent nomenclature among historians? I prefer the latter: the “Asīd” mentioned by Ibn Isḥāq, al-Wāqidī, al-ʿAskarī, and Wiṯāma—and narrated by Mūsā ibn ʿUqba from al-Zuhrī—and the “Asʿad” of Sayf ibn ʿUmar and his followers are one and the same. God knows best. (Bishār)
(3) In Tarīkh Khalīfa (p. 96) and al-Isāba (1:23) the name appears as Saʿd ibn Jurayya, as here in al-Istīʿāb (583), Asad al-Ghaba (2:342), and in al-Dhahabī’s Tarīkh al-Islām.
(4) In the printed edition it reads “Sahl,” which is a corruption; there is also a discrepancy in his father’s name, given as Ḥimār or Jammāz. See Tarīkh Khalīfa (p. 96), al-Istīʿāb (585), Asad al-Ghaba (2:341), and al-Isāba (2:23).
(5) In the printed edition it reads “maḥāsin,” another corruption; see Tarīkh Khalīfa (p. 96) and al-Istīʿāb (1465).
(6) In the printed edition “min” is an error; what appears here is supported by al-Dhahabī’s own Tarīkh al-Islām (his source for this passage). Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in al-Istīʿāb reads “Makhāshin al-Ḥimyarī.” (Bishār)
(7) Thus in the manuscript (kh) and the printed edition, and in al-Dhahabī’s own Tarīkh al-Islām, the reading follows al-Wāqidī’s report, as cited by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar in al-Isāba (2/“tarjama” 4548). Ibn Ḥajar then notes that he was al-Juhānī. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in al-Istīʿāb (2:749) observes that Ḍamra ibn ʿIyāḍ al-Juhānī was a cousin of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays, thus not accepting that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays was one of the companions martyred at al-Yamāma—as al-Wāqidī reports—but apparently referring to the ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays who died in 54 AH (see al-Istīʿāb 3:869–870 and Tahdhīb al-Kamāl 14:316). Al-Dhahabī included al-Wāqidī’s version among the martyrs of al-Yamāma, which Ibn Kathīr subsequently followed. (Bishār)
