…reach him. Al-Tufayl interpreted the dream to signify that he himself would be slain and laid to rest, whereas his son would yearn for martyrdom but would not attain it that same year. Matters turned out exactly as he had understood them; his son was later martyred at Yarmuk, as will be mentioned (1).
Among them was:
ʿAbbād (2) ibn Bishr ibn Waqsh al-Anṣārī. He accepted Islam at the hands of Musʿab ibn ʿUmayr before the Hijrah, prior to the conversion of Muʿādh and Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr, and he was present at Badr and every battle thereafter. He took part in the killing of Kaʿb ibn al-Ashraf, and his staff would shine for him whenever he left the Messenger of Allah in the dark.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, citing al-Zuhrī, said: He was martyred at al-Yamāmah at the age of forty-five, after displaying great valor and endurance.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq reported, from Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr, from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah rose for the night prayer and heard the voice of ʿAbbād, whereupon he said, ‘O Allah, forgive him.’” (3)
Among them was:
al-Sāʾib (4) ibn ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn, a participant in Badr and an accomplished archer. An arrow struck him on the Day of al-Yamāmah and killed him while he was still a young man—may Allah have mercy on him.
Among them was:
al-Sāʾib (5) ibn al-ʿAwwām, the brother of al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām. He too was martyred on that day—may Allah have mercy on him.
