Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

…to turn it into something like the baḥīrah, sāʾibah, waṣīlah, or ḥām (1); rather, I shall give it away in charity.” And so he did, and he passed away, and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ used to marvel at him (2).

When al-Mundhir died, the people of Bahrain apostatized and set up over themselves al-Gharūr, namely al-Mundhir ibn al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Mundhir. One of them declared, “Had Muhammad been a prophet, he would not have died.” No settlement there remained steadfast except a village called Jawāthā (3), which was the first village among the apostates to hold the Friday prayer, as is established in al-Bukhārī on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās. The apostates besieged the villagers and pressed them hard, cutting off supplies so that they suffered severe hunger until Allah granted relief. A man among them named ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥadhaf of the Banū Bakr ibn Kilāb, when hunger became unbearable (4), recited:

“Go, bear a message to Abū Bakr—and to all the youths of Madinah gathered!
Will you not hasten to a people of honor, confined in Jawāthā, held fast?
Their blood in every valley shines like sunlight that dazzles onlookers.
We have placed our trust in the All-Merciful; indeed, we have found patience (5) the portion of those who rely on Him.”

Then one of their nobles, al-Jārūd ibn al-Muʿallā—who had migrated to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, as a preacher—stood among them and gathered them, saying, “People of ʿAbd al-Qays, I am going to ask you about something; inform me if you know it, and do not answer if you do not.” They replied, “Ask.” He said, “Do you know that Allah had prophets before Muhammad?” They said, “Yes.” He asked, “Do you know this with certainty, or is it mere conjecture?” They answered, “We know it with certainty.” He asked, “What became of those prophets?” They said, “They died.” He replied, “Then Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, has died just as they did. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” They responded, “We too bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is…"

(1) Al-Zamakhsharī states that in the pre-Islamic period (Jāhiliyya), when a she-camel produced five offspring along its belly and the last one was male, they would “bahr” its ear—that is, slit it—declare it inviolable for riding, and refrain from driving it away from water or pasture. If the milker (al-maʿī) encountered it, he would not ride it. This animal was called al-Bahīra. A man would say, “When I return from my journey or recover from my illness, my she-camel will be sāʾibah (unbridled),” applying the same prohibitions as on al-Bahīra. It is also reported that when a man freed a slave he would declare, “He is sāʾib,” meaning no blood duty or inheritance binds them. If a ewe bore a female lamb, it belonged to the tribe; if male, it was dedicated to their gods. If both were born, they said, “She has reunited with her brother,” so they did not slaughter the male for their deities. Likewise, if a stallion’s line produced ten colts, they considered his back “protected” (ḥamā), refraining from riding or loading him and allowing him free access to water and pasture. (3) Jawāthā: with a short “u,” between two alifs a thrice-emphatic “th,” with both long and short vowels. It was a fortress of Banū ʿAbd al-Qays in al-Bahrayn, conquered by al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddīq in AH 12 by force. Ibn al-ʿArabī explains that Jawāthā is the city of al-Khaṭṭ; others record it as Juʾāthā with a hamzah. Juʾāthā was also the first place where the Friday prayer was held after Medina. ʿIyāḍ adds that in al-Bahrayn there is a site called Qasr Jawāthā, and it is said that all the Arabs apostatized after the Prophet ﷺ except the people of Jawāthā. (Muʿjam al-Buldān, vol. 2, p. 174; Muʿjam Mā Istaʿjam, p. 401.) (4) The verses are found in Muʿjam al-Buldān, vol. 1, pp. 174–175. (5) In Muʿjam al-Buldān it is noted: “We have located al-Naṣr.”
