and he was healed. The jinn withdrew from them out of fear and awe of him, and in obedience to his order—may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. Allah then sent to him a group of jinn who listened to the Quran; they believed in him, affirmed his truthfulness, and returned to their people to summon them to the religion of Muhammad ﷺ, warning them against opposing him, for he had been sent to both mankind and jinn. Many clans of the jinn embraced faith, as we have already mentioned, and numerous delegations came to him. He recited Surah al-Rahman to them, informed them of the gardens awaiting those of them who believe and the fires awaiting those who disbelieve, and legislated for them what they may eat and what they should feed their beasts—an indication that he clarified for them matters far more important and far greater than that.
Abu Nuʿaym (1) relates here the account of the ghoul that used to steal dates from a group of his Companions ﷺ. They wanted to bring her before him, but she absolutely refused out of dread of standing in his presence. She then ransomed herself by teaching them the recitation of Ayat al-Kursi, whose reciter Satan cannot approach. We have presented all its chains and wordings in our commentary on Ayat al-Kursi in the Tafsir (2); all praise is due to Allah.
The ghoul is a jinn that manifests by night in a frightening form.
Abu Nuʿaym also records here how Gabriel (peace be upon him) repeatedly protected him from Abu Jahl, as we have mentioned in the Sira, and how Gabriel and Michael fought on his right and his left on the Day of Uhud.
Concerning the union of prophethood and sovereignty that Allah granted to Solomon—just as He had granted it to Solomon’s father before him—Allah offered His servant Muhammad ﷺ the choice of being either a kingly prophet or a servant-messenger. He consulted Gabriel about it, and Gabriel advised him to be humble; so he chose to be a servant-messenger. This is related in the reports of ʿAʾishah and Ibn ʿAbbas, and there is no doubt that the rank of messenger is higher. The treasures of the earth were presented to our Prophet ﷺ, yet he declined them.
He said:
“If I wished, Allah would make the mountains of the earth flow with gold for me, but I prefer to go hungry one day and satiated the next.”
We have cited all of this with its proofs and chains in the Tafsir and in the Sira as well; praise and gratitude belong to Allah.
The ḥāfiẓ Abu Nuʿaym also includes here a portion of these narrations: from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Saʿid and Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“While I was asleep, the keys of the treasuries of the earth were brought to me and placed in my hands.” (3)
He likewise transmits—from al-Ḥusayn ibn Waqid, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir—a marfūʿ report:
“I was brought the keys of the treasures of this world upon a dappled horse; Gabriel came to me with it, draped in a garment of green silk.” (4)
And from the narration of al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah…
