Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

…all the while repeating:
“Glory be to You, O Bringer-forth of vegetation, O Ever-Constant!”
He called out, “Come here, Umm Muslim, and behold the most astounding of wonders.”
So Umm Muslim came, and the beads were still revolving and proclaiming Allah’s transcendence; but no sooner had she sat down than they fell silent ⦗1⦘.

More authentic and explicit than all of this is al-Bukhārī’s ḥadith from Ibn Masʿūd: “We used to hear the food glorifying Allah while it was being eaten” ⦗2⦘.

Our shaykh said: “Stones also greeted him.”
I add: Muslim relates from Jābir ibn Samurah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I know a stone in Mecca that used to salute me before I was sent as a prophet; I still know it now” ⦗3⦘. Some scholars said that the stone in question is the Black Stone.

Al-Tirmidhī reports: ‘Abbād ibn Ya‘qūb al-Kūfī narrated to us, saying, al-Walīd ibn Abī Thawr narrated from al-Suddi, from ‘Abbād ibn Yazīd, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him):
“I was with the Prophet ﷺ in one of the outskirts of Mecca. No mountain or tree faced him without saying, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.’” ⦗4⦘ Al-Tirmidhī then remarked, “It is gharīb (isolated).”

Abū Nu‘aym also records it in Dalāʾil from al-Suddi, through Abū ‘Umārah al-Haywānī, from ‘Alī, who said: “I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he did not pass by any stone, tree, clod of earth, or anything else without it greeting him with peace.”

We have already mentioned at the beginning of the account of his commissioning that, after Gabriel first brought him revelation, he returned home and could not pass a stone, a clod of earth, or anything else without it saying, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.”

Our shaykh continued: A tree once advanced toward him when he summoned it; he told how two trees came together to screen him while he relieved himself behind them, then returned to their places. Both reports ⦗5⦘ are sound, yet they do not necessitate that the trees possessed inherent life—perhaps they were moved by One who moves all things. Still, his words, “Come to me by Allah’s leave” ⦗6⦘ indicate that they perceived his address, especially in light of their obedience to his command.

He further related that the Prophet ﷺ ordered a cluster of dates to come down from a palm tree; it came hopping along the ground until it stood before him. He then asked, “Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?” ⦗7⦘ It testified three times, after which it returned to its place. This account aligns more closely and clearly with the preceding examples than the one before it, though its chain of transmission is somewhat unusual.
