Naṣr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Ḥāzim Abū Muḥammad al-ʿAnazī narrated to us; al-Miswar ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, from Abū Maʿn, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “My community is on five strata, each stratum lasting forty years. As for my stratum and that of my Companions, they are people of knowledge and faith; the second stratum, from forty to eighty years, are people of righteousness and piety.” (1) He then went on to mention something similar.
This is his exact wording. The report is rare through these two lines of transmission and is not free of objection; Allah knows best.
Imām Aḥmad said: Wakiʿ narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us; Hilāl ibn Yasār narrated to us, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The best of people are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. After that there will come a folk who put on weight, love obesity, and volunteer testimony before they are asked for it.” (2)
Al-Tirmidhī (3) transmitted it through the route of al-Aʿmash.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also related it from Shuʿbah, from Abū Ḥamzah, from Zahdam ibn Muḍarrib, who said: I heard ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The best of my ummah are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.” ʿImrān added, “I am not sure whether he mentioned two generations after his or three.” He continued, “Then after you there will come people who testify without being asked, betray when entrusted, make vows yet do not fulfill them, and corpulence will become prevalent among them.” This is al-Bukhārī’s wording. (4)
Al-Bukhārī also said: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us; Sufyān related to us, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbd Allāh, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best of people are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. After that there will come a people whose testimony precedes their oaths and whose oaths precede their testimony.” (5)
Ibrāhīm said, “They used to strike us for giving testimony and pledges while we were still children.”
The rest of the compilers—apart from Abū Dāwūd—also recorded it through multiple chains from Manṣūr with this same wording. (6)
