—from al-Jārūd, from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Do not revile Quraysh, for a scholar from among them will fill the earth with knowledge. O Allah, You made its first part taste retribution; so make its last part taste bounty.” Al-Ḥākim also related it through Abū Hurayrah (1).
Al-ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī said, “He is al-Shāfiʿī.”
I add: al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah have mercy on him—d. 204 AH. We have set aside an entire volume for his biography and have appended to it the biographies of his students who followed him.

Ruʿād ibn al-Jarrāḥ narrated—from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah—in a marfūʿ report: “The best of you after the two-hundreds is the one light in provision (khafīf al-ḥādh).” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who is ‘light in provision’?” He replied, “The one who has no wife, no wealth, and no children.” (2)

Ibn Mājah said (3): al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Khallāl narrated to us; ʿAwn ibn ʿUmārah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muthannā—the son (4) of Thumāmah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Anas ibn Mālik—told me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Anas ibn Mālik, from Abū Qatādah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The signs will appear after the two-hundreds.” (5)
Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī narrated to us; Nūḥ ibn Qays narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿqil narrated to us, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas ibn Mālik, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: “My community will be on five strata. For forty years they are people of righteousness and piety; then those who follow them, up to one hundred and twenty years, are people of compassion and mutual kindness; then those who follow them, up to one hundred and sixty years, are people of estrangement and severed ties. Then comes killing upon killing—so seek salvation, seek salvation!” (6)
