Ibn ʿAdiyy said:
“I heard Ibn Ḥammād relate to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdah ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Suwayd ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Ḥajjāj ibn Tamīm narrated from Maymūn ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘I passed by the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while Gabriel was with him, though I supposed him to be Dihyah al-Kalbi. Gabriel then said to the Prophet, “His clothes are soiled, yet his descendants after him will wear black.”’(1)
He (Maymūn) mentioned the remainder of the report concerning his loss of sight and its restoration before his death. Al-Bayhaqī remarked(2): ‘Ḥajjāj ibn Tamīm is the only one to transmit it, and he is not reliable.’
Al-Bayhaqī also said:
‘Al-Ḥākim informed us; Abū Bakr ibn Isḥāq and Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Balawayh, among others, narrated to us; they said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us; ʿUbayd ibn Abī Qurrah narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Abū Qabīl, from Abū Maysarah, the freedman of al-ʿAbbās, who said:
“I heard al-ʿAbbās say: I was with the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—one night and he said, ‘Look—do you see anything in the sky?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘What do you see?’ I said, ‘The Pleiades.’ He said, ‘Indeed, a number equal to them from your loins shall one day rule this community.’”(3)
Al-Bukhārī commented: ‘ʿUbayd ibn Abī Qurrah, a Baghdādī who heard from al-Layth, is not corroborated in the narration about al-ʿAbbās.’(4)
Al-Bayhaqī further related—through the transmission of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿĀmirī, who is weak—from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to al-ʿAbbās: ‘Within your line are Prophethood and kingship.’(5)
Abū Bakr ibn Abī Khaythamah said:
‘Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Abū Maʿbad, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said, “Just as Allah began with the first of us, I hope He will conclude with us.”’(6) This chain is sound, and the statement is mawqūf—coming from Ibn ʿAbbās himself.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said:
‘Ibrāhīm ibn Ayyūb narrated to me; al-Walīd narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ghunayyah narrated to us, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said:
“We heard Ibn ʿAbbās while we were saying, ‘Twelve leaders, twelve leaders; then comes the Hour.’ Ibn ʿAbbās said, ‘How foolish you are! After that, from us—the People of the House—will come al-Manṣūr, al-Saffāḥ, and the Mahdī, who will hand it over to Jesus son of Mary.’”(7) This too is mawqūf.
