—“When the sons of Abī al-ʿĀṣ reach thirty men, they will turn the religion of Allah into a cloak for corruption, treat Allah’s wealth as booty passed from hand to hand, and make the servants of Allah their slaves.” (1)
Aḥmad also transmitted it—through ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, from Jarīr—with the same chain. (2)
Al-Bayhaqī said: ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān related to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṣaffār related to us; Bassām—that is, Muḥammad ibn Ghālib—related to us; Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥah related to us; Ibn Luhayʿah related to us, from Abū Qabīl, who said that Ibn Wahb informed him that he was with Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān when Marwān entered and asked him to satisfy a need. Marwān said, “Grant my request, Commander of the Believers. By Allah, my expenses are heavy: I am the father of ten, the uncle of ten, and the brother of ten.” When Marwān turned away—while Ibn ʿAbbās was sitting with Muʿāwiyah on the couch—Muʿāwiyah said, “I adjure you by Allah, Ibn ʿAbbās, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When the sons of al-Ḥakam reach thirty men, they will make the wealth of Allah an estate among themselves, the servants of Allah their slaves, and the Book of Allah a mere pretext; and when they reach four hundred and ninety-seven, their destruction will be swifter than the time it takes to chew a piece of fruit’?” Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “Indeed—yes, by Allah.”
Marwān subsequently mentioned another request. He sent ʿAbd al-Malik back to Muʿāwiyah to plead for him, and when ʿAbd al-Malik had gone, Muʿāwiyah said, “I adjure you by Allah, Ibn ʿAbbās, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ referred to this man, saying: ‘The father of the four tyrants’?” Ibn ʿAbbās said, “Indeed—yes, by Allah.” (3)
This ḥadīth is highly irregular and objectionable, and Ibn Luhayʿah is weak.
Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī said: Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Saʿd ibn Zayd—the brother of Ḥammād ibn Zayd—narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam al-Banānī, from Abū l-Ḥasan, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah—who had been a Companion—who said:
Al-Ḥakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ came seeking permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ. Recognising his voice, the Prophet said, “Admit him—he is a serpent, or the offspring of a serpent! Upon him be the curse of Allah and upon those who come forth from his loins, except for the believers among them—and how few they are! They will enjoy luxury in this world and be brought low in the Hereafter. They are people of guile and deceit: they will be showered with favours in this world, yet in the Hereafter they shall have no share.” (4)
Al-Dārimī added: This Abū l-Ḥasan was a man of Ḥimṣ.
Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād said in al-Fitn wa-l-Malāḥim: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam narrated to us, from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, from Rāshid ibn Saʿd, that when Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam was born he was brought to the Prophet ﷺ so that he might pray for him, but the Prophet refused. Then he said, “The son of the blue-eyed woman! The ruin of my community will be at his hands and at the hands of his descendants.” This report is mursal.
