Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

As for the people of Babylon, they worshipped idols. It was they whom Abraham challenged regarding those idols: he demolished them, degraded them, and proved their futility.

The Most High says:
“Indeed, you have taken idols instead of Allah, binding yourselves together in affection for them in the life of this world; but on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another. Your abode will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers.” (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:25)

And in Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ He says:
“We had already granted Abraham sound judgment before, for We knew him well.
When he said to his father and his people, ‘What are these statues to which you are so devoted?’
They replied, ‘We found our forefathers worshipping them.’
He said, ‘You and your forefathers have indeed been in manifest error.’
They said, ‘Have you brought us the truth, or are you merely jesting?’
He answered, ‘Rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One who created them, and I am a witness to that.
By Allah, I shall surely devise a plan against your idols after you have turned your backs and gone away.’
So he reduced them to fragments, all except the largest of them, so that they might return to it.
They exclaimed, ‘Who has done this to our gods? He must be one of the wrongdoers!’
Some said, ‘We heard a young man speaking of them—he is called Abraham.’
They said, ‘Bring him before the eyes of the people, so that they may witness.’
They said, ‘Is it you who did this to our gods, O Abraham?’
He replied, ‘Rather, this—their biggest one—did it. Ask them, if they can speak!’
So they turned inward and said, ‘You yourselves are the wrongdoers.’
Then they relapsed and said, ‘You know very well these do not speak.’
He said, ‘Do you then worship instead of Allah what can neither benefit you in the least nor harm you?
Fie upon you and upon all that you worship instead of Allah! Will you not reason?’
They said, ‘Burn him and support your gods if you are going to do anything.’
We said, ‘O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham.’
They sought to scheme against him, but We made them the greatest losers.” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:51–70)

And in Sūrat ash-Shuʿarāʾ He says:
“Recite to them the story of Abraham,
when he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’
They answered, ‘We worship idols and remain in devotion to them continually.’
He asked, ‘Do they hear you when you call on them, or benefit you, or harm you?’
They replied, ‘No; but we found our forefathers doing likewise.’
He said, ‘Have you considered what you have been worshipping—you and your earliest forefathers?
They are all enemies to me, except the Lord of all worlds:
He who created me and therefore guides me;
who gives me food and drink;
and when I am ill, He heals me;
who will cause me to die and then will revive me;
and who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment.
My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous.’” (ash-Shuʿarāʾ 26:69–83)

And in Sūrat aṣ-Ṣāffāt the Almighty says:
“Among his followers was Abraham,
when he came to his Lord with a sound heart,
and said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you worship?
Is it a fabrication—gods other than Allah—that you desire?
So what is your thought about the Lord of all beings?’
He then cast a glance at the stars and said, ‘I am sick.’
So they turned away from him and went off.
He slipped over to their gods and said, ‘Will you not eat?
What is the matter with you that you do not speak?’
Then he struck them with his right hand and smashed them.
They rushed toward him in haste.
He said, ‘Do you worship what you carve,
when it is Allah who created you and what you do?’
They said, ‘Build for him a structure and throw him into the blazing fire.’
They sought to outwit him, but We made them the lowest.” (aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:83–98)

Allah, exalted be He, thus informs us that Abraham, His close friend, repudiated his people’s worship of idols, belittled them before their eyes, diminished their worth, and exposed their defects. He said:
“What are these statues to which you remain so devoted?” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:52)
—that is, you seclude yourselves by them and humble yourselves before them.
They replied, “We found our forefathers worshipping them.” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:53)
Their only argument was the practice of their ancestors and what they had inherited of worshipping rivals.
He said, “Indeed, you and your fathers have been in manifest error.” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:54)
just as the Most High also says:
“When he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship? Is it a lie—gods other than Allah—that you want? Then what is your thought about the Lord of all worlds?’” (aṣ-Ṣāffāt 37:85–87)
