Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it through ʿUmārah ibn Ghaziyyah, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, in wording similar to this (1).
Al-Bayhaqī also said: “Al-Ḥākim and others related to us. They said: al-Aṣamm related to us; ʿAbbās al-Dūrī related to us; Khālid ibn Mukhallad related to us; Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb related to us, from Hāshim ibn Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb ibn Zamʿah, who said: ‘Umm Salamah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down to sleep one day, then awoke looking distraught. He lay down again and slept, then awoke still distraught, though less so than the first time. He lay down a third time, and when he rose there was red soil in his hand which he kept turning over.
“I asked, ‘What is this soil, O Messenger of Allah?’
“He replied, ‘Gabriel has informed me that this one—meaning al-Ḥusayn—will be killed in the land of Iraq. I said to him, “O Gabriel, show me the soil of the land where he will be killed,” and this is that soil.’” (3)
Al-Bayhaqī added: “This is also followed up by Mūsā al-Juhanī, from Ṣāliḥ ibn Yazīd al-Nakhaʿī, from Umm Salamah; and by Abān, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Umm Salamah.” (4)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said in his Musnad: “Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Ṣayrafī narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿĪsā narrated to us; al-Ḥakam ibn Abān narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ‘Al-Ḥusayn was sitting in the Prophet’s lap when Gabriel said, “Do you love him?” The Prophet answered, “How could I not love him when he is the fruit of my heart!” Gabriel then said, “Your community will indeed kill him. Shall I not show you the place of his grave?” He thereupon took a handful, and it was red soil.’” (5)
Al-Bazzār continued: “We do not know this report through any chain other than this one, and al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿĪsā has narrated from al-Ḥakam ibn Abān ḥadiths that we know from no one else.”
I say: He is al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿĪsā ibn Muslim al-Ḥanafī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kūfī, the brother of Salīm the reciter. Al-Bukhārī said concerning him: “His status is unknown, though seven people narrated from him.” Abū Zurʿah declared him “munkar al-ḥadīth,” and Abū Ḥātim said, “He is not strong; he transmitted from al-Ḥakam ibn Abān ḥadiths that are munkar.” Ibn Ḥibbān, however, listed him among the reliable transmitters in his work al-Thiqat.
