Al-Bukhārī also recorded:
“Maḥmūd narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Shuʿbah informed us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, who said, ‘I heard Abū Zurʿah…’ (1)
Ahmad ibn Muḥammad al-Makkī likewise reported to us; ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī, on the authority of his grandfather, said:
‘I was with Marwān and Abū Hurayrah when I heard Abū Hurayrah say, “I heard the Truthful, the One Believed, ﷺ, declare:
‘The destruction of my community will come at the hands of youths from Quraysh.’”
Marwān exclaimed, “Youths?”
Abū Hurayrah replied, “If you wish I can name them: the sons of so-and-so and the sons of so-and-so.” (2)’
Al-Bukhārī alone transmitted this chain.
Aḥmad (3) said: ‘Rūḥ narrated to us; Abū Umayyah ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said: My grandfather Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd related to me, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“The destruction of my community will be at the hands of youths from Quraysh.”
Marwān—who was sitting with us in the study circle before holding any office—remarked, “Then may Allah curse those lads!”
Abū Hurayrah replied, “By Allah, had I wished to say, ‘the sons of so-and-so and the sons of so-and-so,’ I would have done so.”
The narrator continues: Later I went out with my father and grandfather to the house of the Banū Marwān after they had assumed power, and found them taking pledges of allegiance from mere boys; some were being pledged while still wrapped in cloth. He said to us, “Could it be that these men of yours are the very ones I heard Abū Hurayrah mention? These kings resemble one another.”’
Aḥmad further said: ‘ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Simāk. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ẓālim (4) told me: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: I heard my beloved, Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ, say:
“The corruption of my community will be wrought by foolish youths from Quraysh.” (5)’
Aḥmad also transmitted it from Zayd ibn al-Ḥubbāb, from Sufyān—meaning al-Thawrī—, from Simāk, from Mālik ibn Ẓālim, from Abū Hurayrah, and cited it in full (6).
He likewise reported it through Ghundar (7) and Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah, from Shuʿbah, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, from Mālik ibn Ẓālim, who said: ‘I heard Abū Hurayrah’—Rūḥ added: ‘while he was addressing Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam’—say, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, Abū al-Qāsim…’
