Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān also relates:
Ḥarmla narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Ibn Lahīʿah informed me, from Abū al-Aswad, who said:
Muʿāwiyah entered upon ʿĀʾishah, and she asked, “What made you kill the people of ʿAdhrāʾ—Ḥujr and his companions?”
He replied, “Mother of the Believers, I considered putting them to death a means of rectifying the community, whereas letting them live would only corrupt it.”
She said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘At ʿAdhrāʾ, people will be slain for whom Allah and the inhabitants of heaven are angered.’ ” (1)
Yaʿqūb further says:
ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, who said:
I entered with Muʿāwiyah upon the Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah, and she said, “O Muʿāwiyah! You killed Ḥujr and his companions and did what you did. Were you not afraid that I might conceal a man who would kill you?”
He answered, “No, for I am in a house of security. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Faith has shackled treachery; a believer does not assassinate.’ Mother of the Believers, how am I with you in every other matter you may need?”
She replied, “You are fine.”
He said, “Then leave me and Ḥujr until we meet before our Lord.” (2)
[Another report]
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān also reports:
ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muʿādh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ten of his Companions, “The last of you to die will be in the Fire.” Among them was Samura ibn Jundab.
Abū Naḍrah said: Samura was indeed the last of them to die. (3)
Al-Bayhaqī comments: Its narrators are reliable, except that no direct hearing of Abū Naḍrah al-ʿAbdī from Abū Hurayrah has been firmly established. Allah knows best. (4)
It is also transmitted through the chain of Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥakīm, from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas ibn Ḥakīm, who said:
I used to pass through Madinah and meet Abū Hurayrah; he would not begin with anything until he asked me about Samura. When I told him that Samura was alive and well, he would rejoice and say:
“We were ten in one house when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over us, looked at our faces, grasped the two door-posts, and said, ‘The last of you to die will be in the Fire.’ Eight of us have died and only Samura and I remain. Nothing is dearer to me now than to have already tasted death.” (5)
It has corroboration from another transmission.
