Muslim likewise records the ḥadīth in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1) through the chain of al-Aʿmash, from Sulaymān ibn Mushhir, from Kharshah ibn al-Ḥurr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām. He narrates it and adds: “He brought me to a mountain and said, ‘Climb it.’ Whenever I tried to ascend I slid back on my buttocks, and I repeated this several times.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him, when he related the dream, “As for the mountain, it is the abode of the martyrs, and you will never attain it.”
Al-Bayhaqī remarks (2): “This is a second miracle, for the Prophet informed him that he would not achieve martyrdom—and so it happened: he died in 43 AH, as reported by Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām and others.”
Foretelling the death of Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith at Sarif
Al-Bukhārī says in al-Tārīkh (3): “Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm said: Maymūnah became seriously ill in Mecca and none of her nephews was with her. She said, ‘Carry me out of Mecca, for I shall not die here. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me that I would not die in Mecca.’ So they transported her until they reached Sarif, to the very rock beneath which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had stayed with her, the place where the pavilion had stood. There she died—may Allah be pleased with her.”
I say: Her death occurred in 51 AH, according to the most reliable view.
Reports of his foretelling the slaying of Ḥujr ibn ʿAdī and his companions
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān relates: “Ibn Bukayr narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn Yazīd narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zurayr al-Ghāfiqī, who said: I heard ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib say, ‘O people of Iraq! Seven men from among you will be killed at ʿAdhrā’; their case will resemble that of the Companions of the Trench.’ Ḥujr ibn ʿAdī and his companions were then killed.” (4)
Yaʿqūb adds: Abū Nuʿaym said, “When Ziyād ibn Sumayya mentioned ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah ennoble his face—from the pulpit, Ḥujr picked up some pebbles, let them fall through his fingers, and pelted those around Ziyād. Ziyād wrote to Muʿāwiyah, saying, ‘Ḥujr has pelted me with stones while I was on the pulpit.’ Muʿāwiyah wrote back ordering him to send Ḥujr to him. When they neared Damascus, Muʿāwiyah dispatched men to meet them; they encountered them at ʿAdhrā’, whereupon he had them executed.”
Al-Bayhaqī comments (5): “ʿAlī would not have uttered such words unless he had heard them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
