…an expedition to India; if I am martyred, I shall be among the finest of martyrs, and if I return, I shall return as Abū Hurayrah the freed.
Al-Nasā’ī also recorded it (1): through the transmission of Hushaym and Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah, from Sayyār, from Jabr—some say: Jubayr—from Abū Hurayrah, who said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ promised us a campaign to India …,” and he mentioned the remainder of the report.
Aḥmad further said (2): “Yahyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; al-Barā’ narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: ‘My intimate, the truthful and trusted— the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—told me: “A detachment from this community will be sent to India. If I live to see it and am martyred, so be it; but if I”—and he mentioned the word ‘return’—“then I shall be Abū Hurayrah the freed, for he has emancipated me from the Fire.”’” This wording is unique to Aḥmad.
The Muslims did indeed raid India in the days of Muʿāwiyah, in the year 44 AH; the details of what transpired there will be set out in their proper place. Later, the great and illustrious king Maḥmūd ibn Subuktagīn, ruler of Ghaznah, campaigned in India around 400 AH. He penetrated deep into the land, killing, capturing, taking prisoners and spoils; he entered Somnath, smashed the greatest idol they worshipped, stripped it of its swords and necklaces, and returned safe, divinely aided and victorious, as will be related.

‘The Hour will not come until you fight a people whose sandals are made of hair, and until you fight the Turks: small-eyed, red-faced, flat-nosed, their faces like hammered shields. You will find that, among the best of people, the ones most averse to this affair will be those who eventually find themselves engaged in it. Mankind are like ores: the best of them in the pre-Islamic era are the best of them in Islam. And a time will surely come upon one of you when seeing me will be dearer to him than possessing the like of his family and wealth.’” (3) Al-Bukhārī alone transmitted it with this chain.
He also said: “Yahyā narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘The Hour will not rise until you fight Khūzistān and Kirmān from among the non-Arabs—red-faced and flat-nosed—’”
