Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

It is likewise authentically reported in al-Bukhārī and Muslim, through Thawr ibn Zayd, from Abū al-Ghayth, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
“We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Sūrat al-Jumuʿah was revealed—‘and others among them who have not yet joined them’ (62:3). A man asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are those people?’ The Prophet placed his hand on Salmān the Persian and said, ‘If faith were suspended up by the Pleiades, men from these people would reach it.’(1) Events unfolded exactly as he ﷺ foretold.

Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī transmitted, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿIrq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“By Him in whose hand is my soul, Persia and Byzantium will surely be opened up for you, until food becomes so plentiful that the name of Allah is no longer mentioned over it.”(2)

Imām Aḥmad, al-Bayhaqī, Ibn ʿAdī, and others relate—through Aws ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, from his brother Sahl, from their father ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah ibn al-Khaṣīb—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Expeditions will be dispatched. Join the expedition to Khurāsān, and then settle in the city of Marw, for Dhū al-Qarnayn built it and invoked blessing for it, saying, ‘No harm shall ever befall its people.’”(3)

This ḥadīth is regarded as one of the rarities found in the Musnad; some even judge it to be fabricated, and Allah knows best.(4)

The ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah concerning the fighting of the Turks has already been cited through all its chains; it came to pass exactly as he predicted, and it will occur again.

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Shuʿbah narrates—from Furāt al-Qazzāz, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Children of Israel were governed by the prophets: whenever a prophet died, another prophet succeeded him. There will be no prophet after me, but there will be many caliphs.” They asked, “What do you command us to do, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Discharge your pledge of allegiance to the first and then to the first after him, and give them their rights, for Allah will call them to account for what He has placed under their care.”(6)

(1) Narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (no. 4897) under the “Tafsir of Sura al-Jumu‘ah,” and by Muslim in his Sahih (no. 2546 [231]) in the chapter on the Virtues of the Companions. Both report that the man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once, twice, or three times; al-Bukhari specifies that he asked three times. (2) Dalā’il al-Nubuwwah by al-Bayhaqi (vol. 6, p. 334) records a version longer than the one presented here. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir cited only its concluding portion, and Ibn Majah included it in his Sunan (no. 3263, chapter on Food), noting an abridged beginning. In al-Zawa’id he states that its isnad is authentic and its narrators are reliable. (3) Dalā’il al-Nubuwwah by al-Bayhaqi (vol. 6, p. 332) also appears in Musnad Ahmad (vol. 5, p. 357) and in Ibn ‘Adi’s al-Kamil (vol. 2, p. 841). Al-Haythami cites it in Majma‘ al-Zawa’id (vol. 10, p. 64), remarking: “It was narrated by Ahmad and by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and al-Awsat with similar wording. In the chains of Ahmad and al-Awsat it passes through Aws ibn ‘Abd Allah; in that of al-Kabir through Hissam ibn Musak—both unanimously considered weak.” (4) It is remarkable that al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar graded it as hasan (good) in al-Qawl al-Musaddad (p. 133), despite clear indications of fabrication. (5) See the hadith mentioned above. (6) Narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (no. 3455, chapter “Prophets”) and Sahih Muslim (no. 1842, chapter “Leadership and the Prophets’ Governance”): the latter explains that the prophets administer affairs like governors do over their subjects, and siamah (stewardship) denotes managing a task so as to set it right.
