after him; and when Chosroes perishes there will be no Chosroes after him. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the treasures of both of them will most surely be expended in the path of God.”
This wording was recorded by the Two Shaykhs. (1)
Al-Bayhaqī comments: What is meant is the removal of Caesar’s dominion from Syria; it will no longer remain, even though his authority will continue over the Byzantines, for the Prophet ﷺ, when he venerated Caesar’s letter, said, “May his kingdom remain.” As for the empire of Persia, it vanished completely, for he ﷺ said, “May Allah tear his kingdom apart.” (2)
Abū Dāwūd transmits—from Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd, from Ḥammād, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan—from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. (3) We have also related through another route from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb that when the fur-lined cloak of Chosroes, together with his sword, belt, crown, and arm-bands, were brought, he dressed Suraqah ibn Mālik ibn Juʿshum in all of them and said, “Praise be to Allah who has clothed a Bedouin Arab from the desert in Chosroes’ garments.” (4)
Al-Shāfiʿī said: He only dressed him in those things because the Prophet ﷺ had said to Suraqah—while looking at his forearms—“It is as though I can see you wearing the bracelets of Chosroes.” Allah knows best. (5)
Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah relates—from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Al-Ḥīrah has been displayed to me like the sharp teeth of dogs, and you will certainly conquer it.” A man stood and said, “O Messenger of Allah, grant me the daughter of Buqaylah.” He replied, “She is yours,” and they handed her over to him. Her father then came and asked, “Will you sell her?” He answered, “Yes.” “For how much?” “Name whatever price you wish.” He said, “One thousand dirhams.” He answered, “She is yours.” People said to him, “Had you asked for thirty thousand he would have paid it.” He replied, “Is there any number greater than a thousand?” (6)
Imām Aḥmad reports: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī related to us, saying: Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, that Ibn Zughb al-Iyādī told him: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥawālah al-Azdī lodged with me (indeed he was staying in my house) and said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched us on foot around Madinah to acquire spoils. We returned empty-handed, and he perceived the hardship on our faces.” (7)(8)
