A large number of transmitters have likewise related this report from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir cited it with full chains from Mālik, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, Ibn Jurayj, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Mālik ibn Saʿd ibn al-Ḥasan, Abū Ḍamrah Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim Salamah ibn Dīnār, and Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd.
Aḥmad (1) also transmitted it through Yūnus, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah; and ʿAbd al-Razzāq (2) through Ibn Jurayj, from Hishām; as well as through Mālik (3), from Hishām with similar wording.
Later Aḥmad (4) narrated—through Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-Hāshimī, from Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar—who said: “Yazīd ibn Khuṣayfah told me that Busr ibn Saʿīd informed him that he heard (5) in a gathering of the Laythites people saying that Sufyān had related to them,” whereupon he recounted an incident which includes the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“It will soon happen that al-Shām is conquered. Men from this town—meaning Madinah—will set out for it and be captivated by its countryside and its prosperity, yet Madinah is better for them, if only they knew. Then Iraq will be conquered, and a people will set out for it (yabussūn), taking their families and all who obey them; yet Madinah is better for them, if only they knew.” (6)
Ibn Khuzaymah also recorded it through the route of Ismāʿīl. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it as well, from Abū Dharr, on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, with a similar wording, and the same meaning occurs in the ḥadīth of Ibn Ḥawālah.
Supporting all of this is the statement: “Syria will withhold its measure (mudd) and its dinar, Iraq will withhold its dirham and its qafīz-measure, and Egypt will withhold its ardabb and its dinar, and you will return to where you first began,” which is found in the Ṣaḥīḥ. (8)
