while others put the number at one thousand five hundred. Not a single one of those Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—was ever reported to have lived except in a praiseworthy state, nor to have died except upon soundness, uprightness, and divine success. All praise and grace belong to Allah. This is among the unmistakable signs of prophethood and proofs of the Message.

Al-Bayhaqī narrates—through Isrā’īl, from Simāk, from Jābir ibn Samurah—who said:
A man came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has died.” He replied, “He has not died.” The man returned a second time and said, “So-and-so has died.” He said, “He has not died.” He came back a third time and said, “So-and-so has died—he slit his own throat with an arrow-head he had.” The Prophet ﷺ therefore did not perform the funeral prayer for him.
Al-Bayhaqī added: Zuheir also narrated it from Simāk.
Muslim transmitted the same report from this chain in abridged form, mentioning only the funeral prayer.
Aḥmad said: Aswad ibn ʿĀmir related to us; Huraym ibn Sufyān narrated to us; from Bayān ibn Bishr; from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim; from Abū Shahm, who said:
A slave-girl passed by me in Madinah and I grasped her waist. The next morning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was receiving people’s pledges of allegiance. I went to him, but he would not accept my pledge. He asked, “Are you the man of the jabīdha?” I replied, “By Allah, I will never do it again.” Thereupon he accepted my pledge.
Al-Nasāʾī recorded the same ḥadīth through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mukharramī, from Aswad ibn ʿĀmir, with the same chain.
Aḥmad also narrated it through Surayj, from Yazīd ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from Bayān ibn Bishr, from Qays, from Abū Shahm, and mentioned the story accordingly.
