I asked, “Chosroes son of Hormizd?”
He ﷺ replied, “Chosroes son of Hormizd. And if you live long enough you will surely see a man bring out a handful of gold or silver, looking for someone to accept it from him but finding no one who will take it. And one of you will inevitably meet Allah on the Day he meets Him, with no interpreter between the two of them. Allah will say, ‘Did I not send a messenger to you who conveyed the message to you?’ He will answer, ‘Yes.’ He will say, ‘Did I not give you wealth and children, and grant you abundant favor?’ He will answer, ‘Yes.’ Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and he will look to his left and see nothing but Hell.’
ʿAdiyy continued: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Shield yourselves from the Fire, even if only with half a date; and if you cannot find that, then with a kind word.’
ʿAdiyy added: I later saw a woman travel unescorted from al-Ḥīrah until she circumambulated the Kaʿbah, fearing none but Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and I was among those who opened the treasuries of Chosroes son of Hormizd. If you live long enough, you will behold what the Prophet Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ foretold: ‘he will bring out a handful (of riches).’
Al-Bukhārī then transmitted the ḥadīth (3) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad—Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah—from Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl, from Saʿdān ibn Bishr, from Abū Mujāhid (Saʿd al-Ṭāʾī), from Muḥill, on his authority, with the same wording. Al-Bukhārī alone relates it by these two chains.
Al-Nasāʾī (4) also narrated it in the version of Shuʿbah, from Muḥill, on his authority: ‘Guard yourselves against the Fire, even if with half a date.’
Al-Bukhārī recorded it through Shuʿbah, and Muslim through Zuhayr, both from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿqil, from ʿAdiyy, as a marfūʿ report: ‘Shield yourselves from the Fire, even if with half a date.’ (5)
The two of them likewise included it in their Ṣaḥīḥs (6) through the chain of al-Aʿmash, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Khaythamah, from ʿAdiyy.
