Most certainly, the passage can bear no other sense. Should anyone from the People of the Book try to divert it and force an interpretation that it concerns Jerusalem, such a reading is unfitting in every respect—and Allah knows best.
In the Scrolls of Jeremiah it is stated:
“A star has appeared from the south; its beams are lightning, its arrows pierce all barriers, and mountains are crushed before it.”
This, too, refers to Muhammad ﷺ.
In the Gospel, Jesus—peace be upon him—says:
“I am ascending to the gardens on high, and I shall send you the Paraclete, the Spirit of Truth; he will teach you everything, and he will speak nothing of his own accord.”
The Paraclete is Muhammad—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—just as Jesus also said: “and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me whose name is Ahmad” (Sūrat al-Ṣaff, 6).
This is a vast field. Were we to assemble everything that has been cited on the matter, this chapter would grow exceedingly long. We have therefore limited ourselves to a few samples that will guide anyone whose insight Allah illumines and whom He leads to the straight path. Many of these texts are perfectly well known to their scholars and rabbis, yet they persist in concealing and withholding them.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī reported: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ and Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn al-Faḍl told us, saying, “Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb related to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Munādī narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib transmitted to us; Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿUmar reported to us; ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb narrated from his father, from al-Faltān ibn ʿĀṣim, who said:
‘We were seated with the Prophet ﷺ when his gaze fixed on a man, so he summoned him. A Jewish man approached, dressed in a tunic, trousers, and sandals.
The man kept saying, “O Messenger of Allah,” and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept asking him, “Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?” Whatever the man said began only with, “O Messenger of Allah,” and the Prophet would repeat, “Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?” but the man refused.
The Prophet ﷺ then asked, “Do you recite the Torah?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “And the Gospel?” He said, “Yes—and by the Lord of Muhammad, I could recite the Furqān as well, if I wished.”
The Prophet said, “I adjure you by the One Who sent down the Torah and the Gospel”—and he placed him under oath by other things—“do you find me mentioned in them?” He answered, “We find a description like yours emerging from your land. We had hoped he would be one of us. When you appeared, we thought you were he; but when we examined more closely, we found you were not.”
The Prophet asked, “Why not?” The man replied, “We find that from his nation seventy thousand will enter Paradise without reckoning, while you are but few.”
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed Lā ilāha illā Allāh and said Allāhu akbar, repeating the tahlīl and the takbīr, and then declared, “By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, I am indeed that prophet, and from my community there will be more than seventy thousand—seventy upon seventy—who enter Paradise without account.”’
