Al-Bazzār transmitted the report in exactly this wording and with the same chain.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī, however, related it through another route, saying:
“Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdān informed us; Abū Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾammil informed us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Sawwār narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khālid al-Sakkarī al-Raqqī narrated to us; Yaʿlā ibn al-Ashdaq told me, saying:
‘I heard al-Nābighah—the poet of Banū Jaʿdah—say:
“I recited these verses to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they pleased him:
We have risen to the sky through our glory and our wealth,
yet we still hope for a station even higher than that.”
He ﷺ asked, “And what is that station, O Abā Laylā?”
I replied, “Paradise.”
He said, “Yes—if Allah so wills.”
[Then I continued to recite:]
There is no good in forbearance when it lacks
quick resolve that protects its clarity from being clouded;
Nor is there any good in ignorance unless beside it
stands a clement man who, when a matter is advanced, can draw it back.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “You have excelled; may Allah never break your teeth.”’
Yaʿlā added, ‘I later saw him after he had passed a hundred-odd years, and not a single tooth of his had fallen out.’
Al-Bayhaqī said: It is also reported from Mujāhid ibn Salīm, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jarād, who said: ‘I heard al-Nābighah say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard me reciting these lines of mine:
We have ascended to the sky in chastity and in honor,
and we still hope for a position higher than that.
He mentioned the rest with the same meaning and said: “I saw all of his teeth—white like fresh hail; not one of them had fallen out or become loose.”’
Another narration: Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī also said: ‘Abū Bakr al-Qāḍī and Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūsuf Abī ʿAmr both informed us; they said: al-Aṣamm narrated to us; ʿAbbās al-Dūrī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Baḥr al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us; Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us; Thābit and Sulaymān al-Taymī narrated to us, from Anas…’
