and confined him, chaining him up for fear that he might re-join them. We went in to see him, admonished him, and said, “Do you not perceive the blessing that came to you through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” We kept at him until he abandoned their creed; once he repented, Allah restored that very hair to his forehead.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī also transmitted this account through a different chain. He said: al-Ḥākim and others related to us; al-Aṣamm related to us; Abū Usāmah al-Kalbī related to us; Shurayḥ ibn Muslimah related to us, from Abū Yaḥyā Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, who said: Sīf ibn Wahb told me, from Abū al-Ṭufayl:
A man from Banū Layth named Firāsh ibn ʿAmr was suffering from an intense headache. His father brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who seated him in front of him, took hold of the skin between his eyes and pulled it together until it contracted. In the very place where the fingers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had touched, a hair sprouted, and the headache left him; he was never afflicted by it again. The remainder of the story concerning the hair is the same as what has already been mentioned.
Another narration: Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim al-Ḥazzānī narrated to us; Yaʿlā ibn al-Ashdaq narrated to us; I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jarād al-ʿUqaylī say: al-Nābighah—meaning al-Jaʿdī—told me:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and recited some of my poetry:
We have risen above mankind in chastity and honor,
and yet we hope for a station even higher than that.
He ﷺ asked, ‘And what is that station, O Abā Laylā?’ I replied, ‘Paradise.’ He said, ‘Yes, if Allah so wills.’ Then he said, ‘Recite to me.’ So I recited:
No good is there in forbearance if it lacks
swift resolve that shields its clarity from being muddied;
Nor is there good in ignorance unless beside it
stands a clement man who, when a matter is advanced, can draw it back.
The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘You have done well; may Allah never cause your teeth to fall out.’”
