It is likewise related in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections (1) that the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to bless ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf when he noticed on him the faint saffron trace (2) customarily worn at weddings. Allah answered His Messenger’s prayer: He opened for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān the doors of commerce and of war-booty until his fortune became immense; when he passed away, one of his four wives accepted just a quarter of her prescribed eighth share in return for eighty thousand.
Another sound report, transmitted through Shabīb ibn Gharqadah, relates that he heard the people recount from ʿUrwah ibn Abī al-Jaʿd al-Māzinī that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once gave him a dinar to buy a sheep for sacrifice. With it he purchased two sheep, sold one of them for a dinar, and brought the Prophet a sheep together with the original dinar. The Prophet said, “May Allah bless the bargain of your right hand.” In another wording he prayed for blessing in ʿUrwah’s trading—so much so that, had he bought mere soil, he would have profited from it (3).
Al-Bukhārī narrates: ʿAbdullāh ibn Yūsuf told us, Ibn Wahb informed us, Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb informed us, from Abū ʿAqīl, that his grandfather ʿAbdullāh ibn Hishām used to take him to the market (4) to purchase food. There they would meet Ibn al-Zubayr and Ibn ʿUmar, who would say, “Let us share in your transaction, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has prayed that you be blessed.” He would include them, and he might on occasion acquire an entire riding-beast just as it was and have it sent to his house (5).
Al-Bayhaqī also reports: Abū Saʿd al-Mālinī informed us, Ibn ʿAdī narrated to us, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-Ḥalabī narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Mustamlī narrated to us, Shabābah ibn ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, Ayyūb ibn Sayyār narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, from Abū Bakr, from Bilāl, who said:
“I gave the call to prayer one cold morning, and the Prophet ﷺ came out but found no one in the mosque. He asked, ‘Where are the people?’ I replied, ‘The cold has kept them away.’ He then said, ‘O Allah, remove the cold from them,’ and I saw them coming out fanning themselves (6).”
Al-Bayhaqī comments: Ayyūb ibn Sayyār is the sole transmitter of this report, and a similar instance (7) has already been mentioned in the famous ḥadīth of Ḥudhayfah concerning the Battle of the Trench.
